Provenance unknown. In library as of 2011. The manuscript was among the Washington items offered by the Philadelphia auction house Thomas Birch's Sons in December 1890 (Catalog No. 657, Lot 21). The sale was part of the final settlement of the estate of the widow of Lorenzo Lewis (1803-1847), Washington's grandnephew. According to a typewritten note attached to the manuscript and signed by H.D.L. Lewis, the executor of the estate, the lot was purchased by "Messrs. Mitchell of 830 Broadway, N.Y."
