These 12 letters, all written to Allen's daughter Emma Merrit, are handwritten copies of the original letters (location of originals is unknown). The majority of the letters are actually written by both G. Nelson Allen and Elizabeth Allen. In the letters they discuss their lives in Ohio and Wisconsin as well as their decision to go to Colorado to try their luck there. While on the journey to Colorado, G. Nelson and Elizabeth discuss the trail, its conditions, the weather and landscape, the other emigrants they pass, the loss of their dog Beppie, and the Native Americans with whom they interact, more specifically the Pawnee. The letters are written from Fort Des Moines, Cass County and Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Fort Kearny, Nebraska. In the letter dated 1887, Elizabeth Allen reminiscences about their trip across the plains. In one letter (1858), G. Nelson reminiscences about living on the Gila River, near Tucson, Arizona and Fort Yuma. Included are transcripts of the letters.

    Microfilm of the diary of William Nelson, kept in St. George from 1877-1900. The first several frames contain a family record for William's grandparents, James Nelson and Sarah Alcock, and a biography of his father Aaron Nelson (1823-1908) and his second wife Selina Palfreyman Nelson (1843-1930). The biography describes Aaron and William's journey to the United States, their work in Salt Lake City, and Aaron's involvement in the Black Hawk Indian War in Sanpete County. William Nelson's diary includes very brief daily entries made from February 1877 to October 1900. He writes of his work shoemaking and of traveling around Cedar Ridge and Parowan playing music, often with his father. Most of the entries focus on his daily activities such as digging ditches and attending choir practice at the St. George Temple, the weather, and news about various family members and acquaintances. The final page of the diary includes notes on William's children.

    Lionel Allen Sheldon letter to "Dear Nelson,"

    In this 2-page handwritten letter, L. A. Sheldon is asking his friend "Nelson" to help solve a problem with a missing benefit certificate and non-payment of a claim. In the letter he states that the First National Bank of Pasadena will pay on the condition that the certificate is surrendered to them. The letter is written on letterhead of "Offices of Redondo Beach Co." which has a small map of southern California showing Redondo Beach, Los Angeles and other cities. The letter includes a list of the directors of the company including Charles Silent, one of the founders of the city of Redondo Beach.
