Description: The volume contains a record of Samuel B. P. Knox's medical practice for January 1900 to January 1901. It includes patient name and fees paid. Some entries include reason for visiting and the patient's address. The volume also contains several pages in the beginning explaining how to use the book as well as several sections such as "Comparative Scales," "Artificial Respiration," and "Poisons and Antidotes" among others. At the end of the volume are pages for "General Memoranda," "Obstetric Engagements and Practice," "Death Register," and "Cash Account."

John T. B. McMaster ledger of the medical practice of John T. B. McMaster and John L. Hearn

Manuscripts

This bound-volume is a ledger kept by Dr. John T. B. McMaster and his partner Dr. Hearn regarding their medical visits to citizens of New Town, Worcester County, Maryland from 1850 to 1852. The doctors include name of patient (some of the time), reason for visiting, treatment, date of visit, and the fee paid to them for services. The doctors treated both whites and blacks (free blacks, fugitives and slaves). In their ledger, if the patient was black, they would write "Negro" after the patients' name (although it is expected that not every black is identified as such). The patients include a slave at Beverly, a large estate owned by John Upshur Dennis.

Double-column account book of an unidentified merchant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, possibly Richard Footman and Peter Footman. The first page has two contra entries for February 1-2,1756, followed by consistent cash and contra entries from June 1, 1759, to July 31, 1768, on the subsequent pages. Includes a June 11, 1763, entry to "Franklin & Hall in full for Advertisements & the Gazette to 4 March last" (folio 37), as well as an entry for Benjamin Franklin (1764 January 17, folio 41), and David Hall (folios 57, 90). The names of Richard Footman and Peter Footman appear in multiple entries throughout the volume.

H. B. Lansing diaries

Lansing's diaries give a detailed account of his life in California as a gold miner. He talks about his life in the mining camp, his friends and business partners, his home sickness, his desire to "sell out" and go home, as well as the specifics of mining for gold (buying and selling of claims, equipment problems, bad weather, boils on his hands, etc.). Lansing also describes in detail how he and his friends spend their leisure time: gambling, bowling, drinking and going to dances. Lansing mentions the Chinese he works with in the mines, Joaquin Murieta and the hanging of several Mexicans for murder. Lansing works in and travels to several different places in California including San Andreas, Sonora, Chinese Camp, Murphy's Camp and Yackee (Yaqui) Camp. Lansing also gives a daily tally of the gold he finds in his diggings by dollar amount. The first volume covers all of 1853 and second volume only covers January to May 1855.

Medical account book

Manuscripts

This account book includes patient names and fees paid for medical treatment from 1851 to 1881. The author is unknown but might be in Ohio. There is some mention of the treatment performed and reason for visit such as: childbirth, prescriptions of medicine, treatment of wounds, and even some dental work. There are 23 pages of newspaper clippings from newspapers in Ohio (the clippings are sometimes glued over the medical information). The clippings include poems and short articles, many of which are written by Thomas C. Harbaugh, a writer from Ohio. The clippings are from 1895 to 1897. Several pages have been cut-out of the volume.

Memoranda and account book

Manuscripts

In this diary, Hurlbut describes his journey from Vermont to California via steamboat. He landed at Sacramento in April, 1852, and set to work making a land claim and searching for gold. The bulk of the volume contains notations concerning financial accounts and related details. Volume has pre-printed pages, dated January 1 through December 31, 1852.

Samuel B. (Samuel Beach) Axtell letter to Theodore F. Dwight

Manuscripts

Axtell speaks highly of Dwight's family, saying "The name of Dwight is also one which always challenges respect." He writes that he encloses a speech, but the speech is not included with the letter.
