Strang family diaries

Series of seventeen diary volumes written by members of the Strang family between 1878 and 1910. Ten of the diaries were written by Alice Margaret Strang in Los Angeles, California, from 1895-1910, when she was between the ages of twelve and twenty-seven. Her nearly daily diary entries focus on her family, friends, school attendance, church and religious activities, and travel by train to the east coast (to the World's Fair in St.Louis in 1904 and to a church conference in Pittsburgh in 1909). Alice also includes references to various political events, including the outbreak of the Spanish-American War (1895-1901 diary), the election of William McKinley (1895-1901 diary) and a series of entries on his assassination (1901-1902 diary), the death of Queen Victoria (1895-1901 diary), the inauguration of William Howard Taft (1909 diary), and the bomb attack on the Los Angeles Times building (1910 diary). Five of the other diaries were written by Alice's father Robert Edwin Strang between 1876 and 1909 in Marshalltown, Iowa, while traveling throughout the eastern United States, and in Los Angeles. His diaries focus on expense accounting and his daily activities, and his 1876 diary recounts in detail his travels through Cincinnati, Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York, including detailed descriptions of the Smithsonian Institution and other landmarks in Washington, D.C. There is also a single diary written by Alice's mother, Harriet Lemert, in Marshalltown from 1878-1879 and which includes comments on her daily activities. Also included with the collection is an autograph book belonging to Robert Strang (1876-1878), which includes entries from friends in Iowa, New York, Colorado, and Ohio, and two photographs of Alice Strang (one taken c.1900 and the other around the time of her marriage in 1910). All of the volumes are bound.

    Microfilm of nine diary volumes kept by Allen Frost between 1874 and 1901. The first volumes begins as an autobiography, kept while Frost was living at the United Order at Mt. Carmel in Long Valley in 1874. He describes his childhood in England, his journey to New York to live with an uncle, his work in machine shops in New York and as a farmer in Maine, his frequent illnesses, his conversion to Mormonism, his traveling primarily by steamer and rail through New York and Pennsylvania and on to Missouri on his way to Utah in 1861, and his settlement in Bountiful. The volume includes diary entries from 1874-1878 that focus on his life at the United Order at Mt. Carmel and also contains a list of names officiated for in the St. George Temple (January 15, 1878), some genealogy, account notes, a property appraisal, and various notes on the United Order. The diaries dated 1878-1890 primarily recount Frost's daily activities and labors in and around the United Order, St. George, Orderville, and Round Valley, as well as his travels through Utah and Arizona. The diary dated 1890-1893 commences when Frost had moved to Snowflake, Arizona, and the remaining volumes trace his experiences there through his death in 1901. The diary volumes are arranged on three reels of microfilm as follows: Reel 1 - autobiography/diary dated 1874-1878 and diary volumes dated 1878-1880 and 1880-1882; Reel 2 - diary volumes dated 1883-1893; Reel 3 - diary volumes dated 1893-1901.

    Microfilm of a typescript of an autobiography and diary entries made by Perrigrine Sessions. The autobiography and diaries include a detailed family history, an account of his conversion to Mormonism, an account of his travels to Far West, an account of mob violence against Mormons, and account of his move to Nauvoo, a partial diary kept during a mission to Maine in 1839-1840 and again in about 1844, an account of leaving Illinois and traveling overland to Utah in 1847, and account of traveling back overland to Iowa in 1850, diary entries of his British mission in 1852-1854, diary entries made in Utah in 1855, diary entries of a mission in Maine in 1873, and diary entries made in Utah in 1876.

    Microfilm of the diaries of Thomas Judd, covering the years 1876-1878 and 1906-1908. The first two diaries, dated 1876-1877 and 1877-1878, cover Judd's mission to Britain. The 1906 diary covers Judd's activities in La Verkin, his business trips around Washington County, and a trip to Las Vegas and California, including Los Angeles, Pasadena, several beaches, and Santa Catalina Island (where he took a glass bottom boat ride). The 1907 diary describes a second trip to California, including San Francisco, as well as Utah business activities, and the 1908 diary traces Judd's sea voyage from New York to Los Angeles. Portions of the diary are very faint and may be partially illegible.
