    Dissertation on the history of California's cattle industry. Chapters are largely divided chronologically and identified by Pulling as Spanish California Cattle Days (1770-1822), the Mexican Era (1822-1848), Early American California (1848-1862), Drought and Rebuilding (1862-1870), and An Industry at Bay (1870-1890). Covered topics include the natural environment of range cattle, their care and feeding, the price and distribution of cattle products, the number of cattle in California, range restrictions (including the Land Act of 1891), no-fence laws, diseases (including Texas fever, blackleg, and anthrax), various laws regarding cattle ownership and slaughter regulations, and the effect of droughts on the cattle industry. Includes two map drawings of California, an extensive bibliography, and appendices. Presented as a dissertation for the Ph.D. in history from the University of California, June 1944.

    Reminiscences on Ute Indians and the cattle industry in White River Valley, Colorado

    Arthur Burtis Critchlow's reminiscences of his time at the Uintah Valley Indian Agency, the interactions of Ute Indians in Colorado, and the cattle industry. Includes references to the Meeker Massacre of 1879 (which refers to the death of Indian Agent N.C. Meeker and his men during fighting between Uintah Utes and White River Utes), the subsequent relocation of the White River Utes to the Uintah Reservation, the Uncompohgre Indians, the "White Outbreak," and cattle herding and sales. Typed and with commentary probably by James W. Sheridan. Also includes a letter about the typescript sent from Homer C. Crotty to Leslie Bliss in 1942.

    Raymond Cattle Company records

    Manuscripts

    Materials related to the Raymond Cattle Company and the Raymond family of Sheridan, Montana. Primarily financial documents including receipts and correspondence dealing with loans, real estate, and mortgages; as well as individual and partnership tax returns. There are also several miscellaneous receipts for livestock sales, stock certificates, and city services. Land and water documents include mining claims, a grazing permit, and correspondence related to irrigation and drainage, including an agreement with the Northern Pacific Railway Company. A small amount of family materials include Carrie Raymond Junod's typewritten will and a few unidentified photographs. There are four maps of the Sheridan area, including a 1938 hand drawn map of the town, and two drawings of the Raymond property.

    A photograph album with 32 photographs of Portland, Oregon, and the surrounding area. Photographs include waterfalls, winter scenes in the countryside, and grazing cows, as well as a portrait of "Princess Wal-lu-lah" which was reproduced in photographer Lee Moorhouse's "Souvenir Album of Noted Indian Photographs" (1905) as "Princess We-a-lole, Cayuse Maiden"; sweeping view of Portland and Mt. Hood; the capsized French 4-masted bark "Asie" at Davidge's Whart in Portland (this ship capsized in December of 1901); the "Needles" (aka "Pillars of Hercules") rock formations that flank the railroad tracks along the Hood River; H. A. MacNeil's bronze statue "Coming of the White Man" in Washington Park in Portland and views of Multnomah Falls in Oregon; and two buildings under construction from the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905 (the Agricultural Building and the Oriental Building).
