A collection of 574 items from 1825 to 1890, which consists of the correspondence of Thomas Lyon Hamer, his political speeches and notes, and some papers relating to the Mexican War; Hamer's presentation sword and an oil portrait of him are included in the collection. The correspondence includes 240 letters by Hamer to his first wife Lydia Bruce Higgins Hamer (-1845), and family and friends, chiefly during his congressional service. The letters discuss family matters and Hamer's professional life and political career. There are also approximately 200 letters addressed to Hamer from his friends and colleagues, discussing his legal practice and business affairs, political views, and state and national politics. Correspondents include Lewis Cass, Thomas Corwin, James Hall, Robert Lucas, John McLean, Wilson Shannon, and others. W.R. Isaacs MacKay letter to Joseph Libbey Folsom
Manuscripts
MacKay hopes that Folsom's health is improving, and writes to Folsom that "Congress could not fail to exonerate you from all accountability" and that "one thing is certain, you have not been dealt fairly with." He hopes that Folsom's "business troubles are finally closed." He laments the choice of John Bigler for governor of California, saying "I could hardly suppose that California could have sunk so low."

S. P. (Samuel Pierpont) Langley letter to Henry S. Mackintosh

This letter was written by Langley to Henry S. Mackintosh, an American teacher and author. It is on Smithsonian Institution letterhead. The letter reads as follows: "I am very glad to see your hand again, and perhaps I can best answer your inquiry by enclosing you a copy of a report from the Administrative Assistant in the National Museum, in reference to the feathered cloak. If you wish anything more done through the Museum, let me know, though I rather think you would do quite as well with private parties. Very sincerely yours, S. P. Langley."

Robert Selden Garnett letters

These are two letters written by American officer Robert Selden Garnett. HM 46544, dated 1849, August 23, is addressed to A. Somervail Garnett ("My dear Somervail," Robert writes), and is written following the wrecking of the ship Edith off the California coast. Robert assures Somervail that he will do all he can to keep Somervail enrolled at Harvard until his education is completed, and gives Somervail advice concerning his chosen occupational path, particularly the importance of mathematics and surveying. Robert urges Somervail to be steadfast in his studies, but not at the expense of his social life, which Robert considers as important as school. Robert closes by saying he hopes to return to Washington by December 1. In the second letter (HM 46545, dated 1849, September 30), Robert writes to Caleb Lyon concerning the authorship of a proposed "seal or coat of arms for the new state of California" as well as a constitution for the pending state. Robert claims to be the sketcher of the original seal, and gives Lyon the authority to reveal him as such, should he deem it proper.
