  Letter from Charles Rich in Little Salt Lake City to his wife Sarah D. Rich in Great Salt Lake City, Deseret. Rich writes that he has been ill but is recovering, describes his supplies and food, and asks Sarah to pay the taxes at home. He writes that he will send her something when he gets to the mines, gives instructions on building a storehouse, and implores Sarah to "take special care of the children." He also includes notes to his children telling them to behave properly.

  Autobiography of Sarah D. Pea Rich [microform] : 1893

  Microfilm of a typescript of Sarah D. Pea Rich's autobiography, copied at the Church Historian's Office by A.M. Rich in 1933. Includes a brief forward by Sarah Rich dated 1885 (the autobiography was finished in 1893). It begins with stories about Sarah's family history and her childhood in Illinois and Tennessee, and goes on to describe her family's conversion to Mormonism in 1835, of her first meeting with Charles C. Rich, experiences during her early years of marriage, mob violence against Mormons in Missouri, living in Nauvoo, her positive reminiscences on polygamy, the family's 1847 travels to Iowa, living in Mount Pisgah, traveling overland to Utah, and life in Utah during her husband's seven year mission to California. Also includes some genealogy.

  Charles C. and Sarah D. Rich letters

  Typescript of letters written by Charles C. Rich and his first wife Sarah D. (Pea) Rich from August 1, 1853, to January 11, 1863. Rich's letters are addressed to his wives, primarily his second wife Eliza A. (Graves) Rich. He writes from his missions in San Bernardino, California (August 1, 1853 and June 1, 1856) of hot weather, poor crops, and his intentions to leave when the "Lord wills." His letter from a mission in Liverpool, England (January 11, 1863) focuses on a Church conference held at Birmingham from January 1-6, 1863. Two other letters from Rich were written from Nottinghamshire, England (November 22, 1861) and South Wales (January 31, 1861). The majority of Rich's letters focus on instructions and well wishes for his wives and children. Also included is a letter from Sarah Rich to Eliza Rich, and a letter from Sarah to Charles Rich, sent from Salt Lake City and dated August 25, 1853. In it, Sarah writes of the death of their daughter Henrietta from scarlet fever, that the Indians are "at open war with us as a people" and had killed several Mormons at Parley's Canyon, her belief that "Old Bridger [James Bridger, 1804-1881] is at the head of all the war," and her fears about lack of money and supplies for the coming winter.   Modern reproductions of 25 black and white photographs showing members of the Rich and Hunter families. Individual portraits include several of Charles Coulson Rich in middle and old age, three photographs of Sarah DeArmon Pea Rich in her 60s and 70s, and a photograph of Sarah Jane Rich Miller in her early 80s. Other portraits show Joseph C. Rich at age 19 (taken during his work on his father's mission to England in 1860), as a young attorney, at about the time he became judge of the Fifth District of Idaho, and with his wife, Ann Eliza Hunter Rich. Additional photographs depict Ann as a young girl, Joseph and Ann's three children (Edward, Susanna, and Sarah Jane), Ann's father Edward Hunter (taken in Salt Lake City in 1881), and Ann's mother Ann Standley Hunter. Also included are six family tree style pages with photographs depicting Charles Rich's wives and children, including his first wife Sarah DeArmon Pea, second wife Eliza Ann Graves (1811-1879), third wife Mary Ann Phelps (1829-1912), fourth wife Sarah Jane Peck (1825-1893), fifth wife Emeline Grover (1831-1917), and sixth wife Harriet Sargent (1832-1915).

  The collection has been organized by subject, although some subjects can be found throughout the collection. Inclusive dates are 1940 to 1955; much material is from the 1980s and early 1990s, save for selected documents and the Technical Notes and Data series from the 1950s. The files contain many clippings and speeches; there is relatively little daily correspondence, except for scattered letters in the Personal and Projects series. The Technical Notes and Data series contains binders of detailed lecture notes, handwritten calculations, technical articles, data tables, and graphs. This material is from the mid to late 1950s, when Rich was working on the U-2, SR-71, and other reconnaissance aircraft. Much of the collection otherwise involves few technical details, except for a few technical articles under Publications and a few blueprints under Projects. There is a separate series for Rich's memoir, Skunk works. This includes research material, draft chapters, published reviews and private feedback, discussion of potential co-authors, and classification issues. Talks are filed by subject and date in the Speeches series. Photos have been organized in a separate series; these include images of various aircraft, Lockheed events, and portraits of Rich at various phases of his career. An Oversize series includes large photos and binders of notes from his retirement events.
