  Henry Jones diaries

  This collection consists of seven diaries kept by Henry Jones from 1837-1871. Jones' daily entries, often accompanied by philosophical reflections, sentiments, and opinions, begin in November 1837 and continue largely uninterrupted until the end of 1858. Entries for the year 1860 consist of only a few in December. The diary resumes in 1864 and continues until July 1870, when Jones departs for Nebraska. In his diaries, Jones' presents a detailed account of his personal life and his relationship with friends and family, along with the life of the Quaker communities in Gwynedd, Upper Dublin, Montgomery Township, and other villages in Pennsylvania. He relates information on the antebellum and Civil War era because of his frequent trips to Philadelphia, Maryland, New York, and New Jersey. Also included are three cartes-de-visite: one of Henry Jones and two of Mary Yerkes Shoemaker. Jones meticulously documents the local, state, and national abolitionist meetings, conventions, lectures, including women's organizations, that Jones attended for almost 30 years. He writes about his ties with Hicksite Quaker preachers, leading non-Quaker abolitionists, and social reformers, including Lucretia Mott, Frederick Douglass, Thaddeus Stevens, Charles Sumner, and John Mercer Langston. He describes political meetings and conventions between 1838 and 1896, including temperance meetings, festivals, the Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention of 1838, the Whig, and then Republican party nominating conventions. He reveals his opinions on economic and political issues, revivalism, phrenology, "animal magnetism," telegraph, alternative medicine, and spiritualism. He also lists books read, including the writings of Frederick Douglass, Lydia M. Child, and Ralph Waldo Emerson.

  John T. Jones letter to H.H. Kerchoff

  Typewritten letter from the Sixth District Agricultural Association addressed to those "claiming to be a Board of Directors of Sixth District Agricultural Association, elected by the so-called stock holders" and mailed to H.H. Kerchoff. The letter orders the addressees to turn all property of the Board over to the president of the Agricultural Association along with an accounting of their proceeds from that property.

  Autobiography of William Ellis Jones [microform] : 1896

  Microfilm of the autobiography of William Ellis Jones, covering his experiences from childhood through 1896. The first few frames contains notes for ditches for the West Field Canal Co. (appear to be part of Walter S. Tolton, MFILM 00056). The autobiography describes Jones's childhood and family history, his early interest in religion and conversion from Methodism to Mormonism, his arrival in Nauvoo, his experiences in Council Bluffs, his move to St. Joseph in 1855, living in Nebraska in 1856, traveling to Utah in 1861, living near Clover Canyon and Bear Canyon, living in Santa Clara and St. George, teaching school in Hebron and Santa Clara, a list of names of baptisms and endowments (1887), and genealogy notes.

  John Paul Jones collection

  A collection of 40 miscellaneous letters, documents and one volume related to John Paul Jones. The collection includes correspondence and documents in English and French which deal with the disposition of the prisoners of war and refitting American ships of war, and Jones's career as U.S. agent in Europe. Also included are Jones's application to the Society of Cincinnati (1783), and a deposition of the officers of the Alliance defending their actions in the engagement between the Bon Homme Richard and the Serapis (1779). Other correspondents include Paul Francois de Quelen duc de La Vauguyon and Antoine Raymond Jean Sartine, comte d'Alby. The volume, bound in red morocco leather, is titled "Unpublished Autograph Letters / JNO Paul Jones" and includes letters by Jones, with some prints and transcriptions; the volume also includes five letters to William Bixby from George H. Richmond, Bookseller, concerning the Jones' letters.
