Manuscripts
The chronologically-arranged documents demonstrate the range of legal, financial and real estate-related transactions initiated by or concerning the Bernal family and their associates. Included in this series are legal contracts, mortgages, leases, title deeds, promissory notes, tax receipts, and general accounting records. The series also includes personal and business letters to and by the Bernal family members and their associates. Two portraits comprise their own series. Both portraits were taken by San Francisco-based photographers, Charles Lake Cramer and George Daniels Morse, sometime during the last thirty years of the 19th century. Finally, ephemera are contained in the last folder of the collection. Subjects include H. W. Halleck, Joseph Mora Moss, real property in California, San Francisco, San Mateo County and Livermore, California.

Cartes-de-visite (photographs)
Visual Materials
Approximately 5,000 cartes-de-visite and a few tintypes, almost all portraits. The carte-de-visite, or calling card photograph, is generally an albumen print mounted on cardstock, 4 1/4 x 2 1/2 inches. Some photographs are hand colored or have handwritten names written on the back. The binders contain about 200 to 250 photographs each.

There is no writing or stamp on the back of this print, but another copy of this photograph (photPF 26040) is dated January 28, 1870, and has the photographer's stamp: A. Honiss, Escolta, Manila.

A carte-de-visite portrait of a young boy standing in front of a bare wall. On the back, in handwriting, is: "Small Aborigine of Manilla [sic]" and the photographer's stamp: A. Honiss, Escolta, Manila. Estimated date of photograph based on the years British photographer Albert Honiss was active in the Philippines, 1865 to 1874. Please note that a transcription from the item is included here and contains outdated language.

A carte-de-visite studio portrait of a white man in a Marine or naval uniform, taken at Centro Artistico studio in Manila, Philippines. It is unclear, but this is most likely an American Marine or sailor. The photography studio's imprint is on the front and back: Centro Artistico, Fotografia Espanola, Escolta 9, Manila. "Phil Pherry" and "Horace" are written on the back in pencil.
