Cook's diary starts on March 12 when he leaves San Francisco for Alaska and ends September 23 after arriving back home in Lodi, California. Cook talks about traveling on ship, his arrival, his daily tasks, mining camps, etc. The diary also contains lists of supplies with prices and some accounting. With note found in diary.

Margaret Jane Cooper diary

Cooper's diary begins January 1, 1862 while she was living in Pennsylvania. In March 1862, her husband Adam left for the mining town Lincoln City, Colorado. In 1863, she joined him in Colorado. She talks about Denver and mining some. She specifically talks about Indians possibly attacking Denver and martial law being enacted in February 1865. In 1867, she talks about her family's trip back to Pennsylvania (although it seems they later returned to Colorado). She also talks about Lincoln's assassination and funeral. Throughout the whole diary she talks chiefly about her personal life: visits with family and friends; the weather; church going; etc. The diary ends in April 1873. With the diary are six loose pages of writing by Cooper. These include information about her family and some diary entries. There is also a program for "Centennial Federal Reception" in 1876 as well as a letter by J. F. Lewis, MD, to Adam Cooper, also from 1876.

James Judson Jerome diary

In his diary, Jerome talks about his work with several gold, silver, and copper mines in Mohave and Yuma counties, Arizona. He talks specifically about mines around the Cedar, Planet, and Signal mining camps. Jerome performed several different tasks including surveying and recording of mine sites, posting notices on mines, and receiving, distributing, and sending out the mail in Mohave County. Included with the diary are nine pieces of ephemera including two tintypes of Jerome and several postcards.

Experiences and reminiscences of Raymond William Milnor

In this manuscript, Milnor reminiscences about his life. He talks about his childhood in Iowa where he played around railroad tracks and attended a school with a graduating class of 14 students. He talks about his work with the railroads and trips he took. He talks briefly about his time in the war and time spent at Yellowstone Park on his journey to California. Milnor ends his reminiscences with several pages covering his life in southern California - his varying jobs, the many times his family moved around, his daughters' education, family vacations, his retirement, etc.

William W. Bolster diary and photograph album

Bolster's diary (55 pages) begins July 15, 1899, as he left Maine for his trip West. He arrived in Sioux Falls January 21. Bolster gives detailed accounts of his travels though the Black Hills, and Badlands of South Dakota, including visits to Interior, Farmingdale, Rapid City, Spearfish, and Deadwood. Bolster also talks a lot about the people his group met along the way including a drunk cowboy who shot up a saloon and "Hank Clifford and his Indian wife." He also describes his experience in a cattle stampede and troubles with the covered wagon. There is a typed transcript of the diary. HM 81276

Peter Andrew Clapsaddle diary

In this diary, Clapsaddle writes daily entries while on his voyage from New York to San Francisco. In it. he talks about life on board the ship, seasickness, his asthma, three passengers dying on board, church services he attended and the meals he ate. He also gives the ship's position and course. He briefly mentions the ship's stops in Panama and Guatemala, the arrival in San Francisco and a job he obtained with the Evening telegram. With the diary is a typed biography of Clapsaddle, outline of his voyage, map of his voyage and typescript of the diary.
