Description: In this four-page letter, written by Edward Bannerman Ramsay in Edinburgh to John Stevens Henslow, Ramsay talks about his collection of plant specimens and requests that Henslow send him some that he does not already have. Ramsay also talks about other scientists including Charles Lyell, William Jackson Hooker, John Lindley, Robert Graham and George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie (Ramsay had just spent a week at Dalhousie Castle). The letter is in fragile condition.

William Buckland letter to John Stevens Henslow

Manuscripts

In this four-page handwritten letter, Buckland talks about an excavation in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Henslow was working on it at the time but Buckland also knew the site. Buckland goes into detail about the strata of the "Great Gault Pit," and sketched the pit for Henslow (in pencil, with labels in ink). Buckland also talks about other geology issues as well as a skeleton of a megatherium (an ancient giant sloth) that Henslow found.

Sir Edward Sabine letter to John Wilson Croker

Manuscripts

In this letter, written from London, Sabine talks about his voyage in 1821 and his measurements of the Earth (he seems to be sending Croker a copy of a paper on the subject). He mentions the island Spitsbergen (where he took measurements), Earth's meridian, equator, and the "figure of the Earth."

She discusses her personal life and activities with her Methodist Church and the Sunday School she teaches every week. The letter is written on the backs of leaflets for the Santa Maria Land and Water Co. and the city of Ramona, California.

Letter from Olin Wellborn to Captain John W. Swindells in Austin, Texas. Wellborn writes that he would like to recommend Swindells for the clerkship of the New Court, but he had already "signed the petition of another gentleman" for the post.

Circular letters to "Dear Friend"

These three circular letters, from the office of E. G. Lewis in Atascadero, California, are pleas for investments in oil fields owned by Lewis in Wyoming (the Greybull and Alkali Dome fields) and California (Temblodero). In the letters he talks about the oil already being found on these properties, gives reports and updates on the fields' progress since the last letter, his plans to drill more wells and the expected income to be earned by investors. There are blank forms enclosed for investors to complete and return.

Letter and notes of Charles Lyell

Manuscripts

The letter by Lyell is to an unknown addressee ("Sir") and is dated 1866, October 15, and was written from London. In this letter he is talking about a new, 10th edition of his book Principles of geology that is going to be released soon. He also mentions his "amended climate theory." HM 79867.
