Description: The manuscript memoirs, prepared by William G. Felton in 1886. The memoirs cover Felton's military service, including the battle of Lewisburg, the siege of Vicksburg, his time at the Camp Ford Stockade Prison, and his post-war career. Included are accounts of his experiences in stage coaching in Wyoming and South Dakota, including an incident with the Dakota Indians, after which Felton was sent to Fort Laramie; the Battle of Little Bighorn; Crazy Horse's death at Camp Robinson; farming in California and Nevada; and mining in Colorado. Felton specifically talks about Buffalo Bill, Crazy Horse, George Crook, George Custer, Ulysses S. Grant, Henry Heth, Wild Bill Hickok, and Joseph Reynolds.

Civil War memoirs of John G. Lemmon

Manuscripts

Memoirs of the Civil War service that John G. Lemmon wrote in 1866. The memoirs incorporate Lemmon's field diary that covered the period from his enlistment in August 1862 and his improsonment in August 1864, his letters home, and some of his official documents. The manuscript includes a survey of "Hospitals at Nashville (ff. 17 v-- 18) and two hand-drawn maps: "Sketch of Nashville and its Defences as it appeared in the winter of 1863 & 4. Draws at Store-Room Hospital No. 1 January 1864," (ff. 20-21 v.) and an untitled map of the vicinity of Rome and Kingston, Ga.,

William Marton Gable correspondence

Manuscripts

The William Marton Gable correspondence consists primarily of letters from Gable to his mother, Martha Gable and his sister from 1852 to 1886. The letters cover the entire period of Gable's service in the Union Army and contain descriptions of the camp life, hospitals, the military actions, including the bombardment of Fort Pulaski and the Battle of South Mountain. Also included are two prewar promissory notes, Gable's disability discharge, and letters from Gable's chaplain and commanding officers regarding the circumstances of his death and pension rights.

William Hickman Dolman reminiscences

Manuscripts

In his reminiscences, William Hickman Dolman recounts his childhood in Roseville, Ohio (he also spends several pages on the history of his family). Dolman describes years of moving around looking for full-time work and his decision to go to California to mine for gold. Dolman details his overland journey to California including the bad weather, deaths along the way, and a group from his wagon train deciding to turn around and go back east. While in California and Nevada, Dolman talks about his constant struggle to make money from the mines. Dolman moves around a lot, but spends most of his time in Carson City and Gold Hill, Nevada. Dolman also discusses his disappointment with his loss of money in the Comstock Lode, vigilance activity in Carson City, as well as the Battle of Pyramid Lake where Major William M. Ormsby was killed by Paiute Indians. Part of Dolman's reminiscences have been published: New Mexico historical review, July 1947, and Before the Comstock, 1857-1858: memoirs of William Hickman Dolman, also in 1947. This version of his reminiscences is not the same as the two published versions.

William G. Dryden claims against Mexico

This typescript bears the following official title: The National Archives: Records of the Department of State: Claims against Mexico, Commission of 1848; Undocketed Claim No. 8: William G. Dryden. This document constitutes Dryden's claim of damages incurred during allegedly "false imprisonment and other illegal treatment" at the hands of the Mexican government. Dryden, whose testimonies comprise the bulk of this document, claims to have been made a Mexican citizen as a result of his involvement with the Mexican militia. He was given the title Captain of Militia, then later imprisoned for over a year after incriminating documents came into the possession of the Mexican government that indicated Dryden was a Texan spy or Mexican traitor. It does not appear that the Dryden's claim was ever settled. The typescript has been translated into English, and contains numerous annotations, both possibly by W.E. Bard.

Reiteration of a statement given by Lucy Wood Hathaway Lee, wife of Major General Jesse Matlock Lee giving additional details regarding the killing of Oglala Sioux Chief Crazy Horse at Fort Robinson Nebraska in 1877. Also included is an account of the the subsequent disposal of the body and a note about their journey from Fort Robinson to Camp Sheridan. Manuscript signed E.A. Brininstool, Los Angeles, Calif.
