Description: This manuscript is a tax list created by the assistant assessor's office of Salt Lake City, Utah. It records the names of individuals and companies, their location, the nature of their occupation or business, and the amount of tax. Such individuals and companies included are James Willard Cummings (1819-1883), William Samuel Godbe, Godbe & Mitchell, George Goddard (1815-1899), W. H. (William Henry) Hooper (b. 1813), Hosea Stout (1810-1889), Samuel Pierce Hoyt (1807-1889), William Henry Kimball, A. Milton Musser, W. H. H. (William Henry Harrison) Sharp, T. B. H. (Thomas B. H.) Stenhouse, and Edward Stevenson (1820-1897).

The collection contains letters, narratives, and eight large volumes of clippings related to the members of the Jayhawkers, their overland trip to the California gold fields through Death Valley, and their annual reunions held between 1872 to 1918. It also contains diaries by Asa Haines and Sheldon Young of the Jayhawkers' route and a map of Death Valley by William Lewis Manly, approximately 1889. The collection was assembled by John B. Colton (1831-1919), a member of the Jayhawker party. Participants in the collection include: John Wells Brier, Reverend James Brier, William Frederick Dody, Jessie Benton Fremont, John Groscup, Eliza Poor Donner Houghton, Charles Fletcher Lummis, William Lewis Manley, Charles B. Mecum, and Lorenzo Dow Stephens. The collection also includes items related to Mary Hunter Austin, Frederic Remington, and Theodore Roosevelt.

The Eugene Swarzwald Pictorial California and the Pacific Collection consists of 9,674 black and white photographs, negatives, a photograph album, magazine mock-ups, letters, and ephemera, dated 1909-ca. 1968. Eugene Swarzwald and the Swarzwald family collected the material for use in the magazine "Pictorial California and the Pacific." Images depict California and the West with some coverage of the rest of the United States and international destinations. The collection contains photographs depicting general city views of communities in California, scenic views of wilderness areas, images of parks, schools and universities, museums, and points of historic interest (including California mining towns and missions). The collection is strong in subjects related to leisure and social and recreational activities. Many of the photographs are by the Keystone Photo Service. Other photographers include Chuck Abbott, Adelbert Bartlett, Lionel T. Berryhill, Lil and Al Bloom, Hal Boucher, Campbell-Ricco-Mazzuchi Photography, Caroll Photo Service, Garth Chandler, Walter J.
