Description: The small group of items includes two diaries kept by David Woosley while he was a Moravian missionary to the Cahuilla, Cupeño, and Luiseño Indians of southern California. Woosley would travel to the Pala Indian Reservation, the Pechanga Reservation, the Potrero Indian Reservation, and the Fort Yuma Reservation, as well as La Jolla, Rincon, Temecula, and Banning, California, to teach Sabbath School and conduct church services. In his diaries, Woosley includes details regarding his interaction with other missionaries, including William H. Weinland, his experiences with the Indians, their attitude towards Christianity, and their attendance at his church services. One of the diaries contains lists of children that attended Sabbath School at La Jolla and Pechanga from 1908-1911. The other items in the group are several letters, from 1940, written by various missionaries regarding the 50th anniversary of the Moravian's mission work in southern California; an incomplete booklet entitled "Proceedings of the Society for Propagating the Gospel Among the Heathen" for the year 1914 (Woosley is author of one of the entries); and a photograph of the faculty and staff of the Moravian Theological Seminary taken in 1896

Letters, diaries, essays, and other papers of Samuel Frank Dexter. The large portion of the collection consists of the letters that Dexter wrote to his children during the 1901 trip to California. The almost daily letters describe in minute detail their experiences and observations of various parts of California such as Alameda County, Bakersfield, Kern County, La Jolla, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Mount Lowe, Pasadena, Redlands, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Gabriel, San Pedro, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz County, and Santa Monica. The letters also contain descriptions of the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, the California coast, and North Mexico. He also wrote frequently along their railroad trip to California, describing such places as Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, and Iowa.

The Civil War diaries and correspondence of Edward E. Schweitzer. Five pocket diaries cover Schweitzer's military service from September 1861 through August 1865. The entries record movement of the troops, war news, minutia of camp life, etc. There are also three letters from Schweitzer to his family posted from Virginia, Louisiana, and Georgia. Also included are his military records including appointments, certificates of discharge, and a muster-out roll of Co. I of the 30th Ohio. The post-war portion includes Schweitzer's diaries for the years 1869, 1884, and 1885, correspondence related to his effort to obtain disability compensation in 1882, and materials reflecting his membership in the veterans' association of the 30th Ohio Infantry. His letter to Jeannie Anderson of March 24, 1870, describes his stay at a sanatorium in Wernersville, Pennsylvania, including staff, patients, etc. Also included is a diary kept by Jennie Anderson in 1867. The collection contains many publications including issues of the Pennsylvania Inquirer (1865 May 25), the Daily News (Petersburg, Virginia, 1865 May 9), Windsor Currier (Windsor, Missouri, 1871-1872) and Newcomerstown Visitor (Newcomerstown, Ohio, 1871). Also included are copies of several books and pamphlets including The old battle fields revisited after 16 years! : a horseback ride from Chattanooga to Atlanta by C.O. Brown (Sandusky, Ohio : Register Printing House, 1880), History of the Thirtieth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry: from its organization, to the fall of Vicksburg, Miss. by Lieut. Henry R. Brinkerhoff, Thirtieth Ohio (Columbus, O. James W. Osgood, printer, 1863), and printed rosters of the 1888 and 1890 reunions of the 30th Regiment. The collection also includes Civil War memorabilia and photographs.

In this journal, David Maynard relates details of his journey such as supplies purchased, medical treatment sought, as well as brief details regarding progress in his travels. Pre-printed diary filled in by hand; many blank pages. Diary bound in black limp leather, and dated 1850, January 1 - December 30. Also included is printed receipt for a $200 loan from the Banking House of Ben E. Snipes & Co., Ellensburgh, Washington, signed by Maynard.

There is a small group of letters of Andrew Gregg (1755-1855) addressed to his daughters Juliann and Eliza and his sons-in-law David Mitchell and Roland Curtin. The letters deal chiefly with family and business matters, with a few items discussing political affairs. Letters from Theodore Gregg (approximately 1825-1878), Captain of Company F of the 45th Pennsylvania Infantry to his friend John Lieb and his aunt Eliza Gregg Mitchell, discussing his Civil War service. Also included are three bonds signed by William, Joshua, and Josiah Dart, of Bolton, Hartford County, Connecticut (1756 to 1783).
