    Manuscripts

    A small collection of family material related to Helen S. Pratt and Edward S. Steele; it includes manuscripts, correspondence, and ephemera. The manuscripts include information on the Amistad (Schooner), Alexander Steele, James Steele, Descanso Gardens (Los Angeles, California), and biographical information for Helen S. Pratt and Edward S. Steele. The correspondence includes a letter to Oberlin College, and family letters, one of which is a copy of a letter written by John Steele from India in 1839. The ephemera includes photocopies, clippings, and three leather wallets; one of the wallets contains German papiermark bills issued from 1910 to 1919.

    William Henry Pratt papers

    Manuscripts

    Collection consists of material relating to William Henry Pratt's activities in California. Items include a certificate for Pratt's appointment as Surveyor General of California signed by Benjamin Harrison, 1890 March 4 (HM 73028); a certificate for his appointment as Collector of Customs for Humboldt County signed by Chester A. Arthur, 1883 December 26 (HM 73026); a typescript letter signed congratulating Pratt from then-Governor of Ohio William McKinley, 1893 November 13 (HM 73029); a letter addressed to "Lyman" in which Pratt writes of the ships Corona and Pomona, and a postcard of a ship at Fort Ross sent to Pratt by "Walter." Also included is a certificate appointing Jared Turner Deputy Postmaster of Georgetown, California, signed by President James Buchanan, dated 1857 August 14 (HM 73027).

    Helen Winifred Pflueger Papers

    Manuscripts

    The manuscripts include two complete copies of Pflueger's book "New Paradise Lost" as well as draft pages and notes for the novel. There are also papers and essays written by Helen in high school and later in life as well as copies of writings and poems by Helen and others. The diaries span the years 1911 to 1979. The diaries include daily entries with detailed information about Helens' daily activities: visits to friends, seamstress work, trips taken, etc. She also talks a lot about her religious beliefs and her struggles to be a good Christian. The majority of correspondence is written by others to Helen but there are a few pieces of correspondence by her (retained copies). There are several letters to and from Rev. Gilbert P. Symons of the Forward Movement of the Episcopal Church and others dealing with her religious beliefs and search for a church to attend. There is also one letter by Edgar Bergen (1941, Apr. 15) in response to a letter Helen wrote to him and "Charlie." There are also a few letters regarding her book "New Paradise Lost" (1940). The ephemera includes a variety of material including account books, address books, bank statements, biographical information, financial papers, medical papers, calling cards, church bulletins, dress patterns, family estate papers (including a copy of Helen's will), greeting cards, newspaper clippings, photographs, school notebooks and a recipe book. Some of the newspaper clippings deal with Sierra Madre, California. There are also three rolled items: two diplomas from the Minneapolis School of Music (1919-1920) and a painting of Helen Pflueger.     Helen Carhart Williams papers

    The collection consists almost exclusively of incoming correspondence to Helen Carhart Williams from the time of her childhood until middle age. The letters were written by both male and female friends and describe their lives and activities as they attended high school and college, began their careers (several of the women were teachers), and in many cases got married and moved out of state (to Texas and Arizona, among others). Many of the letters contain congratulations to Helen on the occasions of her marriage and the births of her children. The letters also describe the activities of the Delta Iota Chi sorority.

    Pratt family genealogy and record book

    Manuscripts

    Pratt family genealogy and record book probably kept from around 1912 until the mid-1930s. The beginning of the ledger contains concrete business records from 1912. Later pages include family notes for Anson Pratt, William D. Pratt, and Parley P. Pratt II. Also includes a record of the wives and children of Parley P. Pratt, a list of Joseph Smith's wives, a genealogy of Parley Pratt's mother Charity Dickinson, and an extended Pratt family tree. The back of the ledger contains notes from a publishing fund for Ralph M. Pratt and M.W. Pratt. With the ledger are pieces of ephemera including Pratt family badges from the Pioneer Jubilee Reunion of 1897, an agreement of separation for Mathoni W. Pratt and Agnes Ure Pratt (1935), a copy of the Deseret Evening News (July 4, 1904), a letter from Clyde E. Pratt to Mathoni W. Pratt regarding family records (1933), and some Pratt family genealogy notes.

    Helen Wills letter to Sherman Day Thacher

    Manuscripts

    In this letter written on a postcard, Helen Wills acknowledges the letter Thacher sent her and regrets that she will not be able to visit Ojai this year due to a long trip abroad. She is delighted to hear about the new asphalt courts and hopes she can play on them some day. Card is postmarked: Berkeley, Calif., 11:30 PM, Nov. 28, 1925.
