Description: The sketchbooks include portraits of gold miners, men on horseback, and California Indians; sketches of mines and mining towns; and landscape scenes throughout northern California including Fort Bragg, Mattole Valley, Cape Mendocino, the Round Valley Indian Reservation, and Shelter Cove. The sketchbooks include draft sketches for Edouart's paintings "Blessing of the Enrequita Mine" and "Fort Bragg." Also included is a hand drawn map of the area included in the sketches

Shelter Cove is in Humboldt County, rather than Mendocino. One of a series of 35 charts of small California harbors. The maps are hand tinted and include notes on the harbor conditions for ships. From the library of John Haskell Kemble. "Presented to U. S. Coast Survey with compliments of New Zealand Insurance Company ... San Francisco, Jan. 23, 1886." "E. A. Manuscripts

Three sketchbooks by Charmian London, begun when London was sixteen and including images, chiefly in pencil or pen and ink, of people, animals, and places. The volumes date from 1889-1895 (HM 82462), 1893-1895 (HM 82463), and ca. 1894-1924 (HM 82464). Scenes in Devon and Surrey, England, are featured in the second sketchbook (HM 82463). The third sketchbook (HM 82464) is a portfolio whose pages have been removed and interleaved.

A collection of 50 mammoth plate photographs of Yosemite, the New Almaden Mine, and Mendocino, California by photographer Carleton E. Watkins (1829-1916). The prints were in a two-volume set, now disbound, containing a title page dated 1863 and a dedication page reading: "To Ernest Frignet / His California Friends / April 1864." The photographs are landscape views of Yosemite and the Mariposa giant sequoias, taken by Watkins in 1861, followed by 1863 views of New Almaden Quicksilver Mine and Mendocino, both in Northern California. The mining series includes views of workers and the miners' community of small houses and wooden shacks. One view shows young boys with wheelbarrows of rock. The Mendocino Coast images focus on lumber mills near the mouths of Big River, Albion River, and Noyo River, with one view of Native Americans, possibly Pomo, in front of wood plank dwellings, and a group of soldiers at Fort Bragg.
