Rare Books
A set of 23 volumes containing the works of Francesco and Giovanni Battista Pirenasei uniformly bound in red half morocco over marbled boards by Tessler, of Rue de la Harpe, Paris. Each volume also has a presntation bookplate to the Architectural League of New York from Mr. C.H. Seuff, April 1897, with their shelf marks. The 23rd volume is labeled "24" on the spine and it is not clear if the set was originally 24 volumes, or if v.23 was simply mislabeled. The plates of Carceri d’invenzione were separated from v.8 and are housed separately in a folder. The 23 volumes and the folder of Carceri d'invenzione plates have been collated and copy of the details may be found in the Provenance File in Rare Books. 3 volumes with the bookplate "The property of the Merrymount Press, Boston" were added to this set as volumes 25-27. They are numbered on their spines "VIII", "IX" and "X". These volumes duplicate titles already in the original set, but their contents have not been fully collated.

Carrie Belle Deal Ellis diary and receipt book

A manuscript diary kept by Carrie Belle Deal Ellis from December 5, 1892 to May 15, 1893. The diary, written in pencil, records her daily life along with occasional entries listing her expenditures. The entries detail her activities, including painting, and other experiences, and thoughts, as well as her travels, health, the lives of her children, and other domestic concerns. The diary is bound in contemporary sheep with some minor edge wear and soiling, the rear endpaper is loose and some pages at the front of the volume have been removed. The diary is accompanied by a receipt book dated from 1909 to 1912, from the area of Auburn, California. The first entry is 152 which would indicate this volume is part of a series of receipt books. This volume was found with the diary, though there are no details within the book that directly ties it to Carrie Ellis. But, as the Ellis family lived in Washington, California, very near Auburn, it is possible this receipt book belonged to her or a family member. The receipt book is contemporary quarter brown cloth and marbled paper boards, with some creasing on the back cover, and damage to the spine.

San Francisco pharmacy album

A bound volume containing over 2,400 manuscript prescriptions filled by an unidentified San Francisco pharmacy. The dated and numbered prescriptions are mounted on both sides of each page, with approximately seven to nine prescriptions per page; the prescriptions are written on various billheads or plain paper issued by many different physicians. The prescriptions provide information about the doctors, surgeons, pharmacists, druggists, and patients in San Francisco during the latter part of the 19th century; among the drugs prescribed are cocaine, morphine, opium, and literally hundreds of other compounds and simples. There are a number of prescriptions written by women doctors, including Isabel Lowry, who studied medicine in Paris with her twin sister Agnes, and Tey Watanabe, who was a graduate of the University of California, San Francisco, the first Japanese physician licensed in California. With contemporary half morocco and cloth covered boards; the pages in the volume are heavily foxed with considerable oxidation on acid paper. The spine has perished, the rear cover is detached, and the front cover is mostly detached; the pages, however, remain bound and can be easily turned, although the binding is tight in several places.

A botanical album created by Lady Elizabeth Parker Fane; she started painting the illustrations in this album in 1765 which means she was just 14 years old when she began. Flower painting had become a fashionable occupation for the wives and daughters of the great houses of England and Elizabeth Parker Fane achieved exceptional ability under the tutelage of Georg Ehret. The album contains 25 watercolor and gouache paintings on parchment; depicted are both sides of the plant's leaves and also shown are more than one reproductive stage for each specimen: with the early formation of the blossom, the growing petals, and the full expression of the flower. The images in the album depict numerous plant specimens, sometimes with butterflies and other insects, most likely local to the Macclesfield estate, Shirburn Castle, in Oxfordshire. Only a small number of the paintings contain titles, though a few are dated by the artist. The 25 paintings are laid into the volume and the remaining pages are blank. The album is bound in a contemporary, richly gilt morocco wallet binding, with a green silk chemise to wrap top and lower edges; the binding was done by an unidentified binder. The album has a lock and key fastening, though the lock has been deactivated, the key is kept with the companion volume mssHM 84100.
