Charles Fletcher letters to James Gordon Bennett

HM 4004 is a letter addressed to Mr. Bennett, editor of the New York Herald, imploring that the enclosed letter addressing the Oregon Question be published in the Herald. This letter is signed by Charles Fletcher. HM 4005 is the enclosed letter mentioned in HM 4004, and is signed "An American Citizen," and discusses a potential British claim to the Oregon Territory. Both letters are dated 1846, January 26. These manuscripts may be related to HM 4001-4003.

James William Smith letters

The three James William Smith letters are addressed to his brother J. Edward Smith. The first letter, dated August 4, 1842, was written during his voyage to Hawaii on the brig "Sarah Abigail" and describes his journey thus far. The other letters are from 1845 and discuss the Hawaiian government and politics; a land scheme related to Peter Allen Brinsmade and Ladd & Co.; Koloa, Hawaii; fellow Christian missionaries on the island; King Kamehameha III; and Albert F. Judd. Also included is an albumen print of James William Smith dated 1873

William Edmund Pearce letter to William Baker Pearce

In this letter to his father, William E. Pearce reports that he has been laid up with a sprained ankle. Much of the letter is concerned with his journey from Oregon to California. He has settled outside Nevada City and made a mining claim.

The seven letters, which are all addressed to William J. Howard, are written by Patrick Edward Connor, William Proctor Hughey, James Mason Hutchings, and John Ricketson. The letters by Patrick Edward Connor, who was also a California Ranger, discuss Harry Love and the act that was passed May 13, 1854 giving Captain Love his reward money for killing Murieta. William Hughey's letter (1879, June 16) discusses Denis Kearney, the Workingmen's Party of California, and the state constitutional convention of 1878. James Mason Hutchings' three letters (1879) are about tourism in the Yosemite Valley, the Yosemite commission, and the state constitution. John Ricketson's letter (1879, Feb. 27) discusses land in Sonora, Mexico
