Manuscripts

This collection contains correspondence and documents of Abraham Lincoln dating from 1813 to 1865, especially relating to his presidency and the election of 1864, and to the Civil War, including appointments, military commissions, instructions and orders to generals, pardons, and passes. Several items pertain to slavery, including letters and notes, documents regarding gradual emancipation in Delaware, and signed copies of the 13th Amendment. There is a small amount of material for the Lincoln and Todd families. Also present are legal documents, 1838 to 1860, primarily relating to various cases handled by Lincoln during his law partnerships, especially with William H. Herndon. In addition, the collection includes items dating from 1865 to 1911 that concern Lincoln's assassination and the conspirators, his funeral, and his legacy.

The material is related to the Los Angeles performances of a Leroi Jones play, "The Toilet," reviews and commentary about the play that appeared in LAT, and includes letters to the Editor and W.'s responses. The play was obscene, pornographic, racist--provocative in every way--and LAT would not run ads for it. Also in the file is a copy of the play

Eve's Daughters Club presents "His Women Folks,"

Two programs created by the Phillips Temple C.M.E Church's women's club, the Eve's Daughters Club, for performances of the three-act comedic play "His Women's Folks." One program is from 1945 and includes a brown cover page printed with a photograph of the Phillips Temple C.M.E. church. The later program is from 1955 and includes a blue cover page printed with an illustration of nine women in profile. The play was written by Priscilla Wayne and husband Wayne Sprague starring a cast of nine female characters: Martha Lewis; Lucinda Lewis Breckenridge; Jane Lewis; Edith Breckenridge; Polly Breckenridge; William Breckenridge; Mamie (Cook); Liza (Maid); and Patrice/Patience Trent (neighbor). Programs include actor names, administrative information about Phillips Temple, and advertisements from local African American businesses in Los Angeles.
