    William A. Pinkerton letter to G. Lambert, Secretary, International Investment Company of San Francisco, California

    Letter in reply to G. Lambert stating that the check is enclosed as requested for $1250.00, the first quarter payment for the subscription to Guadalajara concession of the Mexican International Investment Company. Letter is on William Pinkerton's private letterhead with the address of his Chicago office.

    William A. Pinkerton letter to G. Lambert, Secretary, Mexican International Investment Company of San Francisco, California

    Manuscripts

    Letter stating that William Pinkerton is in receipt of the prospectus of the Guadalajara concession of the Mexican International Investment Company and that he would purchase 50 shares of the company for a total of five thousand dollars. Lambert is to notify him at his Chicago business address when he is ready for the first payment. Pinkerton expresses that he wanted to buy more stock, but it had been a "dull year." Letter is on Pinkerton National Detective Agency letterhead.

    San Francisco company account book

    Manuscripts

    A brief account book kept by an unidentified San Francisco company that subcontracted for several mining companies in California in the 1860s. The ledger shows segregated payment entries between laborers of different races, represented here by white, Black, and Chinese workers. It also shows entries for printed works done by the noted printer Edward Bosqui. The volume has one tally sheet tipped in and one promise to pay agreement glued in.

    The labor movement in California prior to 1883

    The bound typewritten copy of the thesis covers the history of labor in California from before statehood to the 1880s. Cross discusses in detail the following subjects: Indian labor and the Spanish missions; the increase of population during the Gold Rush; the eventual growth of business and the labor movement in California; labor unions including the National Labor Union, the Workingmen's Party of California, and the Workingmen's Party of the United States; labor leaders such as Dennis Kearney and San Francisco Mayor I. S. Kalloch; riots, demonstrations and strikes related to labor disputes; and the issue of Chinese labor. The copy has handwritten edits by the author as well as notes glued onto the pages.
