Edward Gould letters to Sarah Ann Gould
Manuscripts
Edward Gould wrote these four letters to Sarah Ann Gould, who was perhaps his sister, while he was in California searching for gold. In the first letter (HM 31530, dated 1850, August 30), Gould has sent home "12 1/2/ ounces" and is "keeping grocery at the same place." He writes that he has almost come home several times, but "the thought of coming with so little Dust has kept me back." HM 31531 is dated 1850, October 14, and in it, Edward writes that with the decline of successful digging, things have become very uncertain. However, the city of San Francisco is growing and improving at an incredible rate. In Edward's next letter (HM 31532, dated 1851, April 30) he is back at the mines, after having a dull visit to San Francisco. He hopes his prospecting will improve as the water levels drop, and plans to "engage a little in the boot trade." The fourth and final letter in this series (HM 31533, written 1852, January 13) finds Edward still in the mines, planning to stay through spring.

The collection consists of three miscellaneous manuscripts by Bryce; the majority of the correspondence are letters written by Bryce to various addressees in the political, social, and literary worlds of England and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The papers consist of the following series: 1. Manuscripts & Correspondence (Box 1) are arranged alphabetically by author and title (manuscripts) and by author and addressee (correspondence). This series includes three miscellaneous manuscripts by Bryce; the majority of the correspondence are letters written by Bryce to various addressees in the political, social and literary worlds of England and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The letters deal with personal, political and business/publishing matters and the addressees include: Richard Everard Webster, (Viscount Alverstone), Sabine Baring-Gould, Anne Cobden-Sanderson, and William Gibbs McAdoo. 2. Correspondence & Ephemera (Box 2) is arranged alphabetically by author. This box continues the series of personal, political and business/publishing letters to, among others, George Foster Peabody, William H. Rideing, Harold Felix Baker Wheeler, and Lucien Wolf. This series also includes two Colonial-era documents signed by Thomas Pownall, Governor of Massachusetts (1757-1760), and one folder of ephemera containing a printed engraving and a printed photograph of Bryce.

James Clyman papers

The collection contains 52 items and includes letters and receipts about Clyman's service in the Black Hawk War (1832-1835), receipts and promissory notes from the business operations of Clyman and Arnett in Danville, Illinois (1832-1840). The collection also includes nine volumes of diaries describing Clyman's travels to, life in, and return from Oregon and California (1844-1846) and an 1871 diary kept in Napa, California. Also included is one letter from Henry Dodge (1832) and another letter from Stephen Watts Kearny (1834).
