Billington Crum Whiting Papers

Description

The collection contains Whiting's letters written to his wife during his overland journey to California in 1849 and his early years in California, including a return trip by the still incomplete railroad and stage coach in 1869. The collection also includes some memoirs written by Susan Helen (Colegrove) Whiting in 1895 about her early years in California; a few military papers of B. C. Whiting from his time in the New York militia (1834-1839); genealogical papers of the Colegrove, Mellus, and Whiting families, and a few photographs. The collection consists of six issues of Henry White's handwritten and illustrated newspaper, The Lichfield Monthly Gazette; or Newton Intelligencer (1804 to 1808). There are also 34 letters from Henry White to his friend, Elizabeth Parker of Newton Hall, Chester, England. The letters discuss White's personal activities and interests including book collecting, and life in Lichfield, England.

The Colton family correspondence covers family news, social life in Milan and Columbus, Ohio, including news on exhibits, musical performances, and charity works. Correspondents include Hamilton Colton, Carlos Colton, Sheldon Colton, and Mary Whiting Colton. The Civil War correspondence of Carlos, Hamilton, and Sheldon Colton, George B. Whiting, and Mary Whiting Colton depict the life of a Union soldier as well as life in Ohio in wartime, including discussions of war and politics. There is also some poetry, one photograph, and some ephemera. The correspondence of George B. Whiting deals with his mission work in Beirut.

Daniel C. White diaries

Three diaries kept by Daniel C. White between 1854 and 1864. The first diary, dated 1854-1858, traces White's overland journey from Indiana to California with his friend William V. Rinehart. It includes descriptions of Pawnee and Sioux Indians, crossing the Platte River, and passing by Chimney Rock, Laramie Peak, Devils Gate, and Salt Lake City. It also records White's time mining in and around Sacramento and Marysville, California, and includes some accounting notes, various poetry or song lyrics, and a description of a "hell of a flogging" that White gave to a "Chinaman" who he caught stealing. The second diary is dated 1858-1859, and records White's travels and mining experiences between Sucker Creek, Oregon, and Crescent City, California, as well as some poems and notes. The final diary, dated August-October, 1864, was kept while White was serving with the Union Army in Georgia during the Civil War. It begins while he was near the Chattahoochee River , and he also spends a great deal of time near Owl Rock Church. The diary describes various military engagements and movements, including those near Atlanta. The diary ends when White had apparently been discharged and was near Louisville.
