Index volume to articles regarding California in periodicals

General instructions on using the index volumes: First, see list of topics affixed to verso of front cover. The general subject entries are listed in the top group; references to specific people will be found below under "Personal references." The first (and last) page of each reference is given. Go to the first page of the entry, the continuation of the subject will be noted at the bottom of the page. Names of periodicals and dates of articles are also given, however, only those entries with volume and page number listed in the far-right column are in the scrapbooks in this collection. Each volume differs, so see the following for specific directions.

Volume 1 - In addition to subjects, the left openings at the beginning of this volume contain "Volumes in the Private Library of Winfield J. Davis." Volume 2 - Follow general instructions for Volume 1. Volume 3 - Only the volume and page numbers written in red ink will be found in the scrapbooks. Volume 4 - Follow general instructions for Volume 4. Volume 5 - There are no references to articles in the scrapbooks, only references to the periodicals.
