Charles William Watts papers, (bulk 1897-1900)

A collection of 91 items from 1897 to 1963, which consists chiefly of letters written by Charles William Watts to his wife and daughter between 1897 and 1900. The letters are written from Alaska, including Juneau, Sheep Camp, Skagway, the Yukon River Valley, Dawson, and the Klondike River Valley. Watts's letters describe the Klondike gold rush and life in Alaska and in the Yukon. The collection also contains a photograph of Charles William Watts with a group of hunters and various clippings. There are also a few letters and notes written in 1963 by Lee Rohrbough.

The collection consists of letters (including 2 letter books), manuscripts (including 8 diaries), and documents related to Henry Dalton and his life in early Southern California. Of note are land papers and maps related to Dalton's ranches: Rancho Azusa, Rancho Santa Anita, Rancho San Francisquito, Rancho San José, and Rancho Addition. The collection includes 7 volumes detailing the daily occurences at Rancho Azusa (1845-79), 10 memorandum books, 25 account books, 4 Indian books, and 14 banking and receipt books.

The collection of 1,622 items consists of letters, manuscripts, documents, and maps (1830-1946, bulk 1872-1877), in English and Spanish, related to the business affairs of Lewis Wolfskill. There are land papers concerning various California ranchos, legal papers and bills related to property in both the county and city of Los Angeles, mining papers (San Bernardino County), papers related to Henry Dalton and the Mexican government, papers related to the Centinela Orchard, and papers related to the estate of Francisca Wolfskill Shephard. Correspondents in the collection include: Arizona Superior Mining Company, Robert Burnett, Burnoel Petroleum Company, Charles Cabot, William Cardwell, Francisco Contreras, Manuel Franco Coronel, Još Carman Cos, Henry Dalton, Winnall Augstin Dalton, Victoria Pedrorena de Magnee, Gas̤tn Oxarart, Fraṅois Louis Alfred Pioche, Još Rubio, Herbert Wolfskill, John Reid Wolfskill, and William Wolfskill. A collection of 454 items from 1840 to 1891, which contains personal and professional correspondence of Charles P. S. Wardwell. Correspondents include his wife Marcia P. Wardwell, brothers, parents, and other family members, friends and business associates. The letters discuss family matters, including personal, social, religious, and professional lives of various family members. Subjects also include political news; everyday life, primarily in New England; as well as Wardwell's various inventions and patents. Included are letters describing Page's Oar Factory at Coaticook, Quebec (1859); emigration; working conditions; wages; and social life of miners in California during the Gold Rush; the Civil War; and Freedmen. Also included is a diary of William H. Wardwell covering November 1855 to December 1856 and letters addressed to Marcia P. Wardwell from her sisters.

A collection of approximately 437 items from 1826 to 1950, it consists of the professional, political, and personal correspondence and papers of Charles Henry Ray; chiefly letters addressed to him. Included are letters discussing family news; Ray's studies of medicine in New York; the whaling voyage from 1841 to 1843 onboard the New Bedford whaler Newton; early medical practice in Illinois; business affairs; the Chicago Tribune; the Chicago Evening Post; his involvement in the trade with the South during the Civil War. Also, contemporary politics, including the Republican party, the Lincoln presidency and the Civil War. Correspondents include Levi Ray, Jane Yates Per Lee Ray, Julia Annah Clark Ray, Harvey Hubbard, William M. Fenton, Serranus Clinton Hastings, Tench S. Fairchild, Charles S. Hempstead, James Wilson Grimes, Joseph Medill, Henry Martyn Smith, Lyman Trumbull, Elihu Benjamin Washburne, Horace White, and others. Also included are newspaper clippings of the obituaries of Charles H. Ray, and photographs and portraits of Ray and his second wife. The collection also includes additional family and political letters and a manuscript of "Charles H. Ray and the Chicago Tribune."
