Fugitive writings of H. Buxton : articles contributed to the London Quarterly Review [and other periodicals]

Four cloth-bound volumes containing reprints or clippings of articles written by H. Buxton Forman for the London Quarterly Review, and other magazines between 1868 and 1880. The volumes have manuscript title pages and table of contents. Some additional material laid-in. Volumes have the bookplate of Maurice Buxton Forman. Volumes I-II have title: Fugitive writings of H. Buxton Forman. Articles contributed to the London Quarterly review (1868-1872), (1872-1877). Volume [III] has title "Fugitive writings of H. Buxton Forman : short notices contributed to the London Quarterly Review (1868-1879)". Volume [IV] has title: "Criticisms on contemporaries and other fugitive writings by H. Buxton Forman. London: Published in "Tinsley's Magazine" and other periodicals 1866 to 1874." The collection appears to have been compiled by H. Buxton Forman, the table of contents, title-pages and notes in each volume are in Forman's hand.

The collection consists mainly of letters and questionnaires written between 1904-1908 on the topic of mid-19th-century Los Angeles. Most of the questionnaires, composed by Mary A. Forman, include a correspondent's answers, and most of the letters were written to Forman in response to her questionnaires or other inquiries. Forman presumably conducted the correspondence as a result of her involvement in the Auld Lang Syne Club. There are also a few other documents that she probably acquired as part of her research, including a small number of letters written by Southerners (possibly relatives of A. J. King) during the Civil War and a few 19th-century California letters, most of them written in Spanish. The purpose of most of Mary Forman's inquiries was to obtain very specific details or confirmation of details of Los Angeles history, from what kind of roof a certain house had to which band of Apaches killed a certain man. Because of this, the responses cover a markedly wide range of topics, and the number of authors and other people involved is unusually large for a collection of this size. General topics addressed in the documents include Los Angeles history, California state and local government, crime, medicine, architecture, education, land allotment, churches, agriculture, Indians, the Mexican War, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Photocopies of photographs and a brief biography of Mary A. and Charles Forman, compiled by John Steven McGroaty in Los Angeles: From the Mountains to the Sea, published in 1921, can be requested with the paper versin of this finding aid. Some correspondence is in Spanish.

The collection consists of the personal and business papers of Henry E. Huntington. There is material related to the Huntington, Holladay, and Metcalf families, but most of the collection deals with Huntington's business interests in Southern California, railways, real estate, and industry. Series 2. Henry E. Huntington and his family includes biographical information, newspaper clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, ephemera, and physical objects. There is material related to the Huntington Land and Improvement Company, Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, and the Pacific Electric Railway Company as well as other businesses in Los Angeles County, Orange County, and San Gabriel Valley, California. This material includes business records, account books, annual reports, correspondence, maps, tracts, balance sheets, and others. There is also material related to the founding of the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens including auction catalogs, invoices, receipts, and bills for art and rare books, and information regarding a lawsuit about Huntington's estate tax after his death, and the passing of Proposition 15, in 1930, which exempted The Huntington from paying California property tax. There is also material related to Collis P. Huntington and his business interests and Arabella Huntington. Also included are the blueprints for the Huntington's San Marino residence. Series 3. Correspondence contains over 22,000 pieces of personal and business correspondence spanning 1794 to 1970. The physical objects include Henry E. Huntington's lunch box, razors, traveling trunk, and other items.

View of the two-story house of Charles Forman (1835-1919) and his wife, Mary Forman (1843-1918), located at 1015 West Pico Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, with circular driveway and palm trees. The house was dismantled and moved from Virginia City, Nevada, to its location on Pico in 1882 and demolished in 1913. (See McGroarty, Los Angeles from the Mountains to the Sea, Vol. 2, pages 75-77).
