Three of the letters discuss the shipwreck of the steamer Independence, February 16, 1853, off the coast of Baja California Sur. One of these letters is an 18-page letter by Mary R. Watson, a survivor of the wreck, in which she tells the story of the shipwreck, her son's drowning, and how the survivors made their way to a small island three miles from the ship. The survivors were on the island for three days before another ship saved them. One of the letters, written by Ella Watson Mizner, gives details regarding the San Francisco earthquake of 1906

This collection consists of an autograph album containing handwritten notes, letters, poems, and drawings by approximately 200 friends and acquaintances of American author Charles Warren Stoddard, including leading American literary figures, journalists, poets, critics, politicians, and actors of the late 19th century. Among the many notable contributors are Samuel Clemens, Bret Harte, and Joaquin Miller. The earliest item in the book is an 1863 dedication by Thomas Starr King, and continues with contributions primarily from members of San Francisco literary society beginning in the mid-to-late 1860s through the late 1890s, as well as from friends in other locales where Stoddard lived or traveled including Louisville, Kentucky; Washington, D.C.; Massachusetts; New York; and Hawaii. A letter from L.C. Bayles (page 23) introduces lines of verse with the note "in accordance with your request," reflecting Stoddard's curation of the album as a compendium of verse and personal sentiments tailored towards friendships and literary musings. The volume includes two photographs of groups of men and women, captioned, "Riverdale, N.Y., July 4th 1890" (page 116). Richard Watson Gilder correspondence

The Richard Watson Gilder correspondence consists of letters mainly from Richard Gilder addressed to Brigham Johnson, editor of the Cedar Rapids Republican and later Iowa State Librarian, from 1887 to 1931. Subjects discussed in the letters include literary matters, political issues (particularly Grover Cleveland and the Republican Party), David Bennett Hill, the Gilder family and Gilder's wife, Helena de Kay Gilder. After Richard Gilder's death in 1909, Brigham continued to correspond with Helena de Kay Gilder and the Gilders' daughter, Rosamond Gilder.
