Bliss Carman Collection

This collection contains papers of Canadian-American poet Bliss Carman (1861-1929). There are 65 items in the collection, which consists of correspondence and ephemera. There are 24 letters written by Bliss Carman to Irving Way. In addition, there is one letter from Mitchell Kennerley, from Kennerly Mitchell Publisher written in 1911. The letters written by Bliss Carman are in between 1905 and 1928. The subject matter within Carman's letters relates to his travels, with general remarks about the weather. Other matters mentioned are Carman's personal life, professional life, and trifling advice to his friend Irving Way. There are 40 various pieces of ephemera found in two separate folders. The items include printed items from Bliss Carman, which include his verses and poems. Additional ephemera consist of newspaper and magazine clippings, greeting cards, and note cards. In addition, there are some printed materials with marginal notes and are signed by Bliss Carman.

The collection consists entirely of correspondence and a small amount of printed ephemera. The correspondence includes a small number of letters by other authors, including Anna J. Bird, William Cooper Hunneman, Carl A. Loeffler, Elihu Root and William Howard Taft. The majority of the letters in the collection are by Henry Cabot Lodge; these include a very small number of personal letters but are mainly letters by Lodge to other political letters of the time or to his Massachusetts constituents.

The collection is comprised primarily of the manuscripts, correspondence, photographs, and ephemera of Paul Theroux. His works are often semi-autobiographical and are based on his experiences living and traveling around the world. He is noted for his rich, sometimes ironic, description of people and places. The material comprises almost his entire career as a writer and includes multiple drafts of various works from working notebooks to printed galleys. The collection includes novels (1967-2016), short story collections (1972-2014), non-fiction and travel books (1972-2016), and shorter works including reviews, articles, short stories, plays, and lectures (1960-2015); the collection also includes Theroux's working and travel notebooks (1968-2014). The collection also contains professional papers and business correspondence (1963-2015), with publishers, agents, other authors and reader's letters; included in this material are letters from, among others, Eve Auchincloss, Peter De Vries, Margaret Drabble, Nadine Gordimer, Graham Greene, Blanche C. Gregory, Hamish Hamilton Ltd., Houghton Mifflin Company, V.S. Naipaul, Jonathan Raban, Oliver Sacks, Muriel Spark, Stephen Spender, William Styron, and Auberon Waugh. There is also a smaller amount of family material and personal correspondence (1939-2015), with family and friends; this correspondence includes Eugene Theroux, Alexander Theroux, Peter Theroux, Marcel Theroux, Louis Theroux, Anne Theroux, and various other family members. The ephemera consists of photographs, printed material and magazines (1941-1915).

Songs from the poets: illuminated book of poems
Manuscripts
This is a book of poems written and illustrated by Green. Although the book is undated, there is an inscription by Green on the title page: "These illuminations, made in my early youth, preceded the publication of my first book The Leavenworth case." There is another inscription by Green to her son Roland Rohlfs: "To Roland with love from Mother, May 20, 1930," and another inscription by her son Roland: "And now to Rosamond II with love from Roland, 11/12/1961." This book had previously been on display in an exhibit about Charles Rohlfs.
