Manuscripts
A group of family newspapers passed between the Greene family of Providence, Rhode Island and the Postlewaite family of Westmoreland, Louisiana. The newspapers were edited, written and illustrated by various members of both families and contain family, local and some national news stories on the Civil War, Reconstruction and Rhode Island history; the newspapers also contain detailed, beautiful watercolor and pencil illustrations and drawings. Please note: the newspapers are in fragile condition with fold tears and staining.

The correspondence includes letters written by Lossing, many illustrated with sketches, which he wrote to his family during his travels in preparation for his "Pictorial Field Book of the Revolution." There are also letters by Lossing, chiefly retained copies, to his scholarly associates and publishers. The miscellaneous material includes printed biographical pamphlets, a small scrapbook related to Lossing, genealogical materials concerning the Lossing and other related families, photographs, newspaper clippings, forms, and other ephemera. The collection also includes some unidentified and uncataloged manuscripts, drawings, photographs, sketches, notes, and ephemera.

Painting Pastimes for Young Artists

One painting book entitled Painting Pastimes for Young Artists, drawings by Edith O'Donnell and verses by Gerard Chapman and others, published by Thompson & Thomas, Chicago, 1905. This book is approximately 200 unnumbered pages in length. The front cover is a chromolithograph scene of three children painting the title onto a white fence. The back cover is not illustrated. The endpapers are illustrated with outline images that have been painted in with watercolor. The title page is illustrated, as is the verso of the title page. "Copyright, 1905 by Thompson & Thomas" is printed on the title page verso. The following three pages consist of a preface, instructions, and directions for mixing colors. The remainder of the book is comprised of a combination of chromolithograph, lithograph and outline illustrations for coloring. Some of the illustrations are accompanied by rhymes and verses, others by instructional text. Included are lessons in color, shape, perspective, proportion and shading. Some of the images have been colored in with watercolor or crayon. "Velma Varnam, from 1915. V1906" is written in ms. on the front pastedown.
