Description: Diary kept during the time January 17, 1904 - February 12, 1904 documenting the journey from Santa Barbara to Carmel with her husband, Christian Augustine Jorgensen who was sketching the California Missions. Also included is a A.L.S. written in Rapallo, Italy to Miss Briggs, a pupil in the San Francisco Art School, dated June 3, 1893; three pages of biographical notes; and a newspaper clipping about the paintings of Christian Jorgensen.

Mary Richardson travel diaries

Collection of four diaries kept by Mary Richardson, a cousin of English critic and artist John Ruskin, documenting travel primarily in France and Italy, between 1833 and 1841, with the Ruskin family, including John Ruskin. Richardson often describes the sites they visited, her perceptions, and the daily activities of the family during their tours of Europe. The volumes consist of a diary of travel chiefly in Italy, from May-September 1833 (HM 41910); a diary of travel chiefly in France from June 4-August 25, 1835 (HM 41911); a diary of travel in Rome and Naples from December 22, 1840, to March 11, 1841 (HM 41912); and a diary of travel in Italy from March 14-June 23, 1841 (HM 41913). The collection also contains one additional volume: a diary and appointment book of an unidentified individual, presumably a young man, in London, England, in 1849 (HM 41914).

William H. Gilbert diaries

William H. Gilbert's United States Christian Commission diaries covering the periods from May 24 to July 4, 1864 (HM 82594), October 20 to December 17, 1864 (HM 82595), and January 24 to October 19, 1865 (HM 82596). The notebooks contain notes that Gilbert made in the process of discharging his duties with the U. S. Christian Commission. The last notebook also contains notes for the final report that Gilbert was required to submit at the end of his commission, a list of "letters written," expenses, memorandum of the members of 1841 graduating class, and a tally of collections for the Bible Society. Gilbert's notes describe hospitals, barracks, camps, and schools in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina, including contraband camps and "colored" schools; prayer meetings, funerals, temperance meetings, and sermons, conversations with soldiers, officers, hospital chaplains, surgeons, Confederate prisoners, civilians, ministers, fellow agents, contrabands (fugitive slaves), notes for letters written on behalf of wounded soldiers; copies of Gilbert's letters to the U. S. Christian Commission members and fellow agents, records of books, clothes, and foodstuffs distributed and needed; expenses, etc.

John Muir letter to Katharine Putnam Hooker

Manuscripts

In this letter to his friend Katherine Hooker, John Muir responds to the news that she is sick in bed with some surprise as she seems so strong to him. He suggests rest and then "plain pure white love-work" with Marian (Dr, Marian Osgood Hooker) tending to their fellow creatures. Muir is glad that Marian is not with him as yellow fever and malaria are rampant. Muir briefly describes life on the river with him staring and sketching. Muir described a week of beauty and fellowship at Manaos on the Rio Negro tributary. He ends the letter with a surprise find of a copy of Katherine's book, Wayfarers in Italy in a lonely house in the Amazon Basin. He fears telling the story in full as Marian might think he's in a fever dream.

Pocket diary of Thomas D. Evans

Complete diary for the year 1864. The daily entries describe Evans' duties filing provision returns, drawing rations, supplies, and ammunitions, etc., gives accounts of camp life, the wounded and fallen in battles, Confederate prisoners, deserters, and guerillas, military operations, news (including a note about Santiago fire of Dec. 1863), and the recruitment in Pittsburgh, and follows Franz Siegel and David Hunter in Shenandoah Valley in the spring and summer of 1864. The accounts of the hospitals are rather sketchy, on the account of his wounded arm; Evans did mention a Christmas dinner and concert organized by Sanitary and Christian Commissions.

Frank P. Sauerwein postcards

The correspondence is made up of twenty-seven postcards written by Sauerwein while traveling through Arizona, New Mexico and Italy in 1904 and 1905. The postcards, addressed to Thomasella H. Graham, give descriptions of Tempe, Arizona, and Venice and Florence, Italy. Sauerwein illustrated the postcards with sketches and watercolors of scenery and buildings he encountered during his trip, including a sketch of the Taos Pueblo. Sauerwein was recuperating from an illness while on these trips so the postcards often discuss his health. Also included are two letters written by Elaine M. Harrison to Gertrude Bailey regarding Sauerwein's artwork, one photograph of Thomasella H. Graham and two photographs of Frank P. Sauerwein

Diaries

The collection contains five diaries kept by Ira Hinckley during his travels in New Zealand from 1882 to 1884 and in Utah from 1885 to 1887. There are also letters written to Hinckley by fellow missionaries Walter Barber, William Bromley, Bennett Clark, Alma Greenwood, Joseph Morris, Ephraim Ralphs and W.T. Stewart. The collection also contains letters from family members, such as Adelaide Hinckley, his mother Angeline Wilcox Hinckley, his father Ira Nathaniel Hinckley, LaVern Hinckley, Emily Noble and Lucien Noble. Of note in the collection is one letter from a Maori family named Ihaia and another letter from two Maori individuals named Robert Manihera and Horiana Whakamairu. There is also one manuscript about Ira Nathaniel Hinckley. The ephemera includes a newspaper clipping and copies of photographs of the Hinckley family.
