George Adams Bright papers
Manuscripts
Letters from George Adams Bright to his family, describing his medical practice, Civil War experience, travels, and family affairs. The collection also includes journals that Bright kept during all of his sea voyages. The letters and journals provide detailed accounts of his Civil War experience, including the siege of Galveston, the blockade and blockade-runners, assault on Fort Fisher, and the post-war career, including details of the 1866 mission to Mexico, news of the Santa-Anna's return to Vera Cruz, June 1867, operations of the Navy in the Mediterranean, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, his work at the Naval Academy, Mare Island, and naval hospitals. Also included are Bright's commissions, certificates, and other documents, a photograph, and some genealogical material. Also included is a journal kept by Bright's younger brother William Mason Bright (born 1848), a sailor onboard of the brig Executive that sailed from Bangor to Azores in July of 1864. The journal gives a detailed account of the voyage, including the information on the crew and the passengers, descriptions of the ports, etc. The diary also contains an account of the meeting with the American consul in St. Thomas and discussions of the war news.

The story of my life by William Elias Abbott

Typescript copy of William Elias Abbott's autobiography and family record. It begins by tracing his ancestors and gives a detailed history of his mother, Abigail Smith Abbott. The majority of the manuscript consists of Abbott's reminiscences of his life and family experiences as a pioneer in Nevada, specifically in Bunkerville and Mesquite, as well as his dedication to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Included is a Military History of Private Israel Abbott, which recounts the wounding of Abbott's brother Israel in France during World War I, typescript copies of several of Abbott's church certificates, and a brief history of My Grandfather, Orville Morgan Allen (1805-1893). Also include are typescripts of several letters, including those to Abbott from Heber J. Grant (1929), Thekla Schaerr (1930), Grace Stirling (1935), Key Pittman (1939), Barbara Adair (1941), and Ruth Cram (1942?); those from Abbott to his nephew Austin Abbott (1941) and to the Moapa Stake Presidency (1941); a letter of recommendation for Abbott as Justice of the Peace from Las Vegas lawyers (1936); a letter from Gordan B. Hinckley to "Leon" (1941); and an exchange of letters between Joseph Smith and John Arlington Bennett (1843). Bound.

John Page Nicholson's collection of Civil War manuscripts. Included are items created during the war - official reports, dispatches, communications, soldiers' letters, diaries, maps, etc., and manuscripts written after the war, such as veterans' memoirs, regimental histories, poems, copies of war diaries, etc. Included are Nicholson's own Civil War letters and a typescript copy of the diary that he kept during his military service. Also included are correspondence and papers accumulated by Nicholson during his work on the translation of Comte de Paris' book, his service with the Legion of Honor and his work for the Board of Commissioners on Gettysburg Monument.Materials created by U.S. presidents include: James A. The collection includes three volumes. HM 4022 is a two-volume diary kept by Merrill during 1841 and 1844 which covers his experience with the U.S. Army. HM 4021 is a scrapbook containing newspaper clippings regarding Merrill's military experiences, the Seminole War and the Mexican War.
