Description: Letter from James Graham Fair to George D. Roberts, sent from Virginia City, Nevada. Fair writes of a "sprinkling" project undertaken by a Mr. Taylor in Silver City. Fair had lately been involved in a suit brought by a Mr. Waddell, who performed the project, against the Devil's Gate Toll Road Company for unpaid wages. Fair writes that Waddell won the case but that Taylor did not attend, and that if he were to attend the subsequent trial "I can defeat the plaintiff in an hour."

Robert Freeman letter to Henry E. Huntington

In this letter on Pasadena Presbyterian Church letterhead, Rev. Freeman discusses a building plan for the proposed educational building for the Pasadena Presbyterian Church at the cost of $150,000. He mentions that Mrs. Howard Huntington suggested that he might be interested in the building project that is waiting for the final bid from the contractor. He goes on to describe the pledge drive, the wide interest the project has enjoyed and the main purpose of providing a wholesome religious environment for the youth. He explains that there are between 1100 and 1200 youth in attendance every Sunday and additional opportunities for weekday activities. Rev. Freeman writes that if Mr. Huntington needed further details that he would be happy to oblige and that he is still in hopes of getting to see the library as he had a prior appointment that was interrupted by the war.

Henry Uhrbroock letter to Mrs. James Clarke

Henry Uhrbroock introduces himself by letter to the wife of James Clarke, whom Uhrbroock describes as his partner. Uhrbroock writes that Mr. Clarke is currently unable to write to his wife, and hopes that she will accept this letter in his stead. He writes of both the atrocities and the beauty of California, and hopes to be able to report favorably regarding Mr. Clarke in the near future.

Reverdy Johnson letter to James W. Denver

Manuscripts

Letter written by Reverdy Johnson to General James W. Denver and sent from San Francisco. Johnson writes that he will not be able to attend a meeting for the "friends of Judge Douglas" due to previous engagements. He mentions that he recently gave a speech supporting Douglas in Boston and had distributed related pamphlets. He also notes that he was having the speech copied in several California newspapers. Includes envelope and typed transcription of the letter.

Belle H. Seager letter to Henry E. Huntington

Manuscripts

Letter to Henry Huntington asking for his aid to enable the Pasadena Boy Scouts to aid French boys to attend summer camp. She relates that the atmosphere created in the Boy Scout organization is extremely beneficial to boys in the devastated areas and to France in general. She goes on to relate the good work the Committee had undertaken under the direction of Miss Jesse Carson and is enclosing a copy of the report in hopes that he has time to read it. Mrs. Seager writes that she would appreciate any aid of suggestions Mr. Huntington might have and gives Mrs. Howard Huntington as a reference concerning the work of the Committee. Mrs. Seager writes that she will be away all summer in New England on Committee business, but her correspondence will be handled by Dr, George E. Hale's secretary. She asks for a short interview with Mr. Huntington when she returns in the fall. Letter is on American Committee for Devastated France letterhead.
