Description: This volume of approximately 600 pages is a selection of letters transcribed by Edmond Malone from the mid-18th century Birch MS 4173 (British Library) volume; the letters are descriptive of the life and times of James I, his court and the political intrigues of the day. There are references to, among others: Sir Francis Bacon, Sir Edward Coke, Sir Walter Raleigh, the death of Henry, Prince of Wales, the divorce of the Earl of Essex and Lady Frances Howard, and the Gunpowder Plot; Malone also adds many explanatory notes to the original manuscript. The volume has a brown calf binding with "MS. Malone Papers, 1608-1613" on the spine, which is slightly damaged.

Richard Malone log of the HMS Harrier
Manuscripts
This ships' log was kept by Richard Malone for Commander Carew during the Harrier's three voyages to South America. Also included is the log of a short voyage in the Excellent, under Captain Sir Thomas Hastings. The volume includes ten manuscript maps (chiefly of waters off South America), one chart, and six original wash drawings of local views, profile elevations, etc., of Tenerife, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Northern Peru, and other South American locales.
