    A. E. Heald letters

    Manuscripts

    Four of the six letters are written by A. E. Heald and are addressed to his mother and sister. In his letters, which are written from Missoula, Montana and Evanston, Wyoming, Heald talks about working in the freight business, local coal mines as well as going to Ogden, Utah and witnessing Mormons celebrating Mormon Pioneer Day. The other two letters are written by a family member, A. D. Heald, and a family friend, Lucinda Thursten. The letter by A. D. Heald is written from Humbug, California, a mining town. In the letter he talks about mining, money that is due to him and his desire to leave California and return home. The letter by Lucinda Thursten is written from Plainview, Minnesota. In the letter she talks about the growth of the town, the agriculture of the area and the ill-health of her husband.

    A collection of 99 items from 1841 to 1967; the collection consists of diaries, letters, documents and manuscripts primarily by John Doyle Lee. There is a letter by William W. Bishop that includes a list of names of persons in and present at the Mountain Meadows Massacre (mssHM 31237). There are also letters by and to several of John D. Lee's wives. There are six volumes of diaries by John D. Lee which span the years 1846 to 1876, as well as several facsimiles of Lee's diaries dating 1841 to 1860, and one diary of his wife, Rachel Andora Woolsey Lee, from 1856 to 1860. Many of the items in the collection are contemporary copies or facsimiles.

    Manuscripts

    The Daniel D. Harkness papers primarily consist of diaries, military records, and photographs related to his service in the 1st Volunteer Cavalry, 34th Infantry Regiment, American Expeditionary Forces, and Forest Service. There are 189 photographs of the Philippines, Hawaii, Arkansas, Lake Arrowhead, New Mexico, and at sea. In addition, there is ephemera related to his time in Langres, France with the AEF. There is a folder with items related to John C. Couts and another related to Oscar N. Land. Other ephemera includes material related to the Roosevelt's Rough Riders Reunion in 1928. There is an oversize panoramic photograph of 604th Engineer Company D, C, and F Washington Barracks, D.C., August 1917. Note: This panoramic photograph is fragile.
