The document is a writ of execution issued by Lawrence County, Alabama, and signed by John McBride, county clerk, in a judgement of action of detinue obtained by Samuel Henderson in his suit against John Reynolds for enslaved people Isham, Phoebe, Jim, Andrew, and an unnamed child.

The documents demonstrate the range of legal, financial, and real estate-related transactions initiated by or concerning the Oreña Family and their associates. Included in this series are title deeds, land claims, and land grants pertaining to the family's properties in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. Also included are receipts and invoices. The manuscripts include four works pertaining to the Oreña Family as well as other early California families, namely the de la Guerra family. The series also contains two typewritten manuscripts: the first is Occurrences in California, as reported by Angustias de la Guerra Ord and the second is Carlota Koch's "La Guipuzcoana," which chronicles the lives of Gaspar Orena, Cesareo Lataillade, Maria Antonia de la Guerra, and those of their acquaintances. The correspondence includes personal and business letters to and by the Oreña Family members and their associates. Among the authors is Alfred Robinson (b. 1806-d.1895), author of Life in California (1891). Four photographs of the Columbus Library in Seville, Spain comprise the fourth series. These black-and-white photos were taken in September 1955. The photographer, who included only his/her initials of "AK," indicated that the images are not available for publication. Finally, three items comprise ephemera. These include two 1891 arguments issued by the Supreme Court of the State of California relating to the case of C.E. Lataillade, Plaintiff and Appellant, vs. Gaspar Oreña, Defendant and Respondent. The final item in this series is an autographed note written on a fragment of an ANP-ANETA News Bulletin, dated April 23, 1951.

Letter from John Bordeaux Wilson to his mother Emma Moore Wilson, written shortly after Wilson had joined the engineering corps of the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868. In the letter, written at Fort Sanders, Dakota Territory, Wilson writes of his dissatisfaction with being removed from Colonel Joseph Opdyke Hudnutt's company and placed instead with a Mr. Lawrence's party, which he writes will "operate much further west" than the other and work east for 250 or 300 miles from the Green River until they meet the other parties. He notes that Colonel Hudnutt's party was headed for the North Platte while John O'Neill's party would work at Medicine Bow, and gives a description of the various supplies carried by each party. The remainder of the letter describes Wilson's attempts to stay warm in his tent and the meals that he has been given. With envelope, marked "Union Pacific Railway Company, Engineer's Office, Fort Sanders - Dakota."

This collection consists of 84 items including legal documents and correspondence. The Manuscripts are made up of legal documents related to several court cases including Miguel Aguirre, et al. vs. Patrick William Riordan (Archbishop of San Francisco), et al., where Foley was an attorney for the plaintiffs, and Jonathan S. Dodge vs. John C. Cline, where he served for the defendant. The first case was taken to court by the Aguirres, who believed that the Catholic Church owed to the family an interest in the Pious Fund of California, which has its origin in the 17th century. As for this case, the collection includes the notes prepared by him and/or someone else for the case. The second case was fought by a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the sheriff of the county. As Foley was also involved as an attorney for R. S. McKenzie in the financial contracts between M. Levinson, Jean R. Patterson, Newton Evans, and McKenzie, there are manuscripts related to that case as well. Related to the case, there is also a bill from the Mortgage Company of Canada to R. S. McKenzie as well as a certificate created by R. S. McKenzie. In addition, the collection includes some sources related to the business of Richard Phelan since Foley was a stockholder of the Esmeralda Quicksilver Mining Company ran by Phelan. The Correspondence includes both personal and business letters written and received by Foley, mostly dealing with the above law cases. Finally, the ephemera includes a memo pad, business envelopes, business cards, and two photographs.

This collection contains the personal and professional papers of American railroad mechanical engineer and innovator William Riley McKeen Jr. (1869-1946) who developed some of the first gasoline-powered railroad motor cars, beginning in 1905 for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1908, he became president of the McKeen Motor Car Company, which built over 150 of the pioneering motor cars through 1917. The materials are primarily focused on the McKeen motor cars and the history of their promotion and production, 1905-1917. Materials include promotional booklets and ephemera, news clippings, scrapbooks, operating manuals, McKeen's personal notebooks and over 300 photographs. Series 1 begins with McKeen's youth and schooling, with examples of some of his engineering notes and workbooks. There are also notes on designing his house, a genealogy of the McKeen family, and his father's estate settlement papers, which include correspondence between McKeen and his siblings. McKeen's professional work and concerns are reflected in several notebooks he kept during his career, with detailed notes related to employees, design issues and other work in the railroad mechanical shops. There are only a few letters of business correspondence, and just one copy of a letter from E. H. Harriman (no original). Among the personal papers is a file of documents related to a 1912 lawsuit brought against McKeen and his second wife, Mary, by Mary's former husband, Charles Hull, in Omaha, Nebraska. This file contains documents that would be of interest to medical and social history researchers: a detective's transcript of observations of prostitutes and activities at brothels (collected to disparage Mr. Hull). Series 2 contains McKeen motor car materials, primarily promotional brochures and ephemera (including a package of custom cigarettes), operating manuals, production statistics, news clippings and articles. See also Series 3 and 4 for clippings and photographs of McKeen motor cars. Series 3 contains three scrapbooks: A) a personal ledger, with clippings; B) a scrapbook of over 100 clippings about the McKeen Motor Car Company, 1907 -- 1920; and C) a scrapbook of photographs and clippings about McKeen motor cars in Australia, 1911-1912. Series 4 contains photographs, including a set of Union Pacific company photographs of McKeen motor cars over the years 1905-1911. McKeen appears in some photographs, and there are some views of employees, Omaha shop buildings, engines and production views. Other photographs show McKeen motor cars on various railroads, some wrecks, engine parts, and views of the McKeen Highway Coach, a passenger vehicle introduced in 1915.
