    Howells-Fréchette families papers

    Manuscripts

    The collection consists mostly of letters, along with some documents, one bound volume of manuscripts, and ephemera related to the family and social life of the Howells and Fréchette families. Along with family papers, the collection also contains materials related to literary, journalistic, and political matters, including ballot counts from the deadlocked 1880 Republican Convention and medical bulletins from the time of President Garfield's assassination. Family members represented in the collection include William Cooper Howells, William Dean Howells, Achille Fréchette, and Annie Howells Fréchette. Additional members of the extended Howells and Fréchette families are represented in the collection as well. Correspondents include Mary Austin, Samuel Clemens, George Cary Eggleston, Hamlin Garland, Richard Watson Gilder, James Abram Garfield, Lucretia Rudolph Garfield, and William Henry Smith.

    Howells Family Papers

    This material includes three manuscripts and thirteen letters of the Howells family; one manuscript is a lullaby by Aurelia Dora Howells, and one is by William Cooper Howells, "Memoranda of My Personal History," which was the basis for his volume Recollections of Life in Ohio. The thirteen letters include a letter by Vevie Frechette, letters by Joseph Howells, William Dean Howells' uncle, letters by Mildred Howells, William Dean Howells' daughter, a letter by William Cooper Howells, and two letters by William Dean Howells.

    James A. Garfield papers

    Manuscripts

    This collection consists primarily of letters written by James A. Garfield, from 1856 to 1881, mostly written while serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Letters to Tracy W. Scott discuss congressional business, appointments, land, and the postal service, especially the post office at Chester Cross Roads, Ohio. Letters to Edmund Burritt Wakefield pertain to congressional committees and elections, appointments, politics, and the Crédit Mobilier scandal; they also discuss education, reading and literature, writing, and health. The collection contains two personal letters to Garfield's cousin, Henry B. Boynton, and two items relating to the Garfield Fund, established to benefit Lucretia Garfield following the shooting of James A. Garfield.
