Andrew Brown papers

Manuscripts

The collection consists of the correspondence and papers of Andrew Brown. The collection is made up primarily of business records and contains 97 volumes of day books, cash books, ledgers, daybooks, and account books. Also included are bills and receipts related to Brown's general store in Kernville, California, his jobs as postmaster and an agent for Wells, Fargo Express Company, and his other business interests. Of note in the collection are two account books from 1873 to 1886 for business transactions with Chinese individuals in Kernville. Some of the volumes are damaged and fragile so use may be restricted.

William Bunker Gardner papers

Manuscripts

The collection consists of letters, a letter book, manuscripts, a journal, a sketch of Fort Ludlow, Washington, a map, and documents. There is one logbook related to the voyage of the Ship Sarah Parker to San Francisco via Cape Horn, from 1852 to 1855, visits to North Pacific ports, and the return trip to Massachusetts. The journal in the collection is by Charlotte Coffin Gardner. The collection also contains a few accounts for the ships Courier, Mary Mitchell, and Flora. There is also correspondence in the collection from 1920 to 1965, most of which is between Grace Brown Gardner, the granddaughter of William B. Gardner and Charlotte Gardner, and Eleanor Jane Graves. This correspondence focuses on the Gardner journal and early Nantucket inhabitants. There are also photographs of William B. Garner and Charlotte Gardiner, dated between 1850 and 1870.

M. Brown letter to "My Dear Sir,"

Manuscripts

This letter, written from Valparaiso, Chile is dated March 7, 1849. M. Brown wrote it on board the USS Independence to a former shipmate aboard the USS Ohio stationed in San Francisco Bay. In the letter, Brown discusses difficulties in Chile, life aboard Commodore Shubrick's vessel, naval politics and news from the rest of the fleet in the Pacific.

Willaim T. Reynolds letter to Mrs. William T. Reynolds

Manuscripts

Letter was written in a Gregory's Express pocket letter book, printed in 1851. Reynolds describes San Francisco and the recent activites of the vigilance committee in the city. He also discusses the possibility of his wife traveling to San Francisco to join him and how she may obtain money through the offices of Page, Bacon & Co

William Reed Bullard papers

Manuscripts

This collection consists primarily of correspondence between Dr. William Reed Bullard and his sister Helen K. (Bullard) Wyman, with a few additional letters from family members including William's wife Mary. In these letters to his sister, William discusses his life and medical practice in both Indianapolis, Indiana and Helena, Montana. Bullard was active in both communities and his letters often describe social activities, celebrations and the growing and shaping of both towns. His letters also reveal Bullard's commitment to his family, and his deep love of music.
