This letter, written from Valparaiso, Chile is dated March 7, 1849. M. Brown wrote it on board the USS Independence to a former shipmate aboard the USS Ohio stationed in San Francisco Bay. In the letter, Brown discusses difficulties in Chile, life aboard Commodore Shubrick's vessel, naval politics and news from the rest of the fleet in the Pacific.

The collection consists of the correspondence and papers of Andrew Brown. The collection is made up primarily of business records and contains over 100 volumes of day books, invoices and account books. Also included are bills and receipts related to Brown's general store in Kernville, California, his jobs as postmaster and an agent for Wells, Fargo Express Company, and his other business interests. Of note in the collection are two account books from 1873 to 1886 for business transactions with Chinese individuals in Kernville. Some of the volumes are damaged and fragile so use may be restricted.

The journal in the collection is by Charlotte Coffin Gardner, the wife of shipmaster William B. Gardner

Willaim T. Reynolds letter to Mrs. William T. Reynolds

Letter was written in a Gregory's Express pocket letter book, printed in 1851. Reynolds describes San Francisco and the recent activites of the vigilance committee in the city. He also discusses the possibility of his wife traveling to San Francisco to join him and how she may obtain money through the offices of Page, Bacon & Co

Samuel Nichols papers

The collection contains letters from Samuel Nichols to family discussing his 1849 overland journey and 1850 ocean voyage to San Francisco via Panama. There are also four letters from his wife, Sarah Ann Taylor Nichols. Among other family papers, there is a diary, from 1821 to 1822, and autobiography, 1821, by Benjamin Hodge, a relative of the Nichols family.
