    The diary covers the period from Sept. 17 through Nov. 20, 1776 and describes the march from Dorchester to New York, the last stages of the New York Campaign, including the battle of White Plains (Oct. 28); camp life, (including punishment meted out to soldiers of his regiment, prayer meetings, sermons, etc.) The rest of the manuscript consists of miscellaneous accounts of payments received for "mending."

    Harvey A. Marckres letters, (bulk 1864, June 3 - July 21)

    Letters that Marckres wrote home between April 24, 1861 and July 21, 1864. The first letter (1861, Apr. 21) describes the "great excitement" that gripped Peacham, including a rousing town hall called up by " 5 or 6 of we boys" to discuss raising of a company and the enthusiastic response it received and raising of a "Liberty pole" on the town square. The seven letters written in the summer of 1864 describe the fighting in Virginia, including the battles of Cold Harbor, Wilson's raid on South Side & Danville Railroad, and the siege of Petersburg, discuss the commanding officers, including Ulysses S. Grant and James Harrison Wilson, and provide updates on the war news.

    Edward E. Ayer letter to James Harvey McClintock

    In this letter on Huntington Hotel letterhead, Ayer gives a brief summary of history of how John Rains married the daughter of Chino Rancho owner Isaac Williams and acquired the Cucamonga Rancho and Robert Carlisle married the other daughter and acquired the Chino Rancho. The remainder of the letter concerns a chance meeting with then Corporal Ayer, Company E, Ist California Cavalry and Robert Carlisle when Ayers was ordered to retrieve some horses in the winter of 1862. When Ayers returned to camp, he was ordered to ride to Santa Monica where along the way he met John Rains at at Mission San Gabriel. There Ayer gave John Rains some advice about rethinking the name of his horse, "Jeff Davis," especially around the company of soldiers. The letter ends with Ayers reporting that Rains was murdered soon after and Carlisle was later killed in a barfight in Los Angeles.
