Manuscripts

Letter primarily concerns reports received from Mexico during the Mexican-American War, and speculates on the whereabous of General Scott and the condition of the army. Buchanan also mentions Harriet, presumably his niece Harriet Lane, who appears to be staying with Walker's family.

Manuscripts

Buchanan writes that he has received the memorials from the saddlers and harness makers of Philadelphia but that the Senate is prohibited by the constitution from originating any bill to increase duties on foreign imports. He thinks it would advisable that the memorials or a portion of them be presented in the House, where bills must originate.

He also discusses a pending bill that would prohibit importation of certain woolen articles, which he plans to vote against unless amended, and expresses opinions on trade and tariffs. Letter includes addressed cover with franking signature.
