In this letter to the otherwise unidentified "Mary", Kern writes of his journey to and arrival at Taos, New Mexico, as part of an expedition led by John C. Frémont. The party nearly starved crossing the mountains, and suffered much from the frozen conditions; ten of the thirty-three men died from hunger and exposure. The letter is signed "Ned." "Mary" may be Mary Kern Wolfe.

In this letter to "Mary", Kern reports that Frémont has moved on, leaving Kern in Taos, New Mexico. As Kern writes, "...he has broken faith with all of us.....he left us with no good wishes." However, he has been treated well in Taos since Frémont's departure, and is regaining the strength lost during the crossing of the mountains. Includes illustration by the author. One of his companions has attempted to retrieve some of the property they abandoned during their perilous journey through the mountains. Kern is hoping to soon begin traveling home by train. Signed "Ned." "Mary" may be Mary Kern Wolfe.

This is an invoice for three months' extra pay due Lieutenant Edward M. Kern for his service as part of the California Battalion under the command of John C. Frémont during the United States' conflict with Mexico. Printed form filled in by hand, with handwritten note on back confirming Kern's service, but unsigned. Dated 1851, November.
