E. Holbrook letters to Mrs. Holbrook

In these two letters to his mother, Holbrook writes of his experiences in the Washington Territory and California. In HM 24543, written from Washington Territory on January 26, 1854, Holbrook writes of local politics and the project of establishing a railroad down the Pacific coast to California. HM 24544, written April 26, 1854 in Sonora, California, contains Holbrook's description of that region, and he compares it with Washington.

Henry Uhrbroock letter to Mrs. James Clarke
Manuscripts
Henry Uhrbroock introduces himself by letter to the wife of James Clarke, whom Uhrbroock describes as his partner. Uhrbroock writes that Mr. Clarke is currently unable to write to his wife, and hopes that she will accept this letter in his stead. He writes of both the atrocities and the beauty of California, and hopes to be able to report favorably regarding Mr. Clarke in the near future.

J.D. Duncan letters to A.H. Campbell

In these two letters to his brother, J.D. Duncan writes that he has arrived in the town of Stockton, California from Wisconsin and plans to head north to the gold mines. A year later, he writes that he has found work with "a large Ditch Company." He writes of the current state of crops, of the scarcity of gold, and the danger posed by Indians. Nevertheless, J.D. believes there is still "plenty of gold to be had." HM 25788 is dated 1857, February 4, and HM 25789 is dated 1858, September 13, and both were written in Stockton, California.

Collection consists of material relating to William Henry Pratt's activities in California. Items include a certificate for Pratt's appointment as Surveyor General of California signed by Benjamin Harrison, 1890 March 4 (HM 73028); a certificate for his appointment as Collector of Customs for Humboldt County signed by Chester A. Arthur, 1883 December 26 (HM 73026); a typescript letter signed congratulating Pratt from then-Governor of Ohio William McKinley, 1893 November 13 (HM 73029); a letter addressed to "Lyman" in which Pratt writes of the ships Corona and Pomona, and a postcard of a ship at Fort Ross sent to Pratt by "Walter." Also included is a certificate appointing Jared Turner Deputy Postmaster of Georgetown, California, signed by President James Buchanan, dated 1857 August 14 (HM 73027).
