    Albion Sweetser writes to his colleagues of planking being done in the city of Sacramento. He had thought of submitting a plan himself, but someone else got the job first. He has not yet sold the house, but there is someone interested. There will be an election for a new mayor on the 14th, as the previous one has passed away. Sweetser wishes to know if his colleagues would like him to sell out his store, but either way, he plans to stay in California.

    This manuscript is a letter addressed "My Dear Uncle" and signed only as "Irving." The author describes his stay in Minnesota while on his journey to California. Also includes a small bit of paper with the following written in pencil: Dec 7th, 1859, Going West.

    Isaac Swain letters to James Fowler Simmons

    Manuscripts

    Swain, who lived in San Francisco, wrote these letters to Rhode Island Senator James Fowler Simmons. In the letters Swain discusses business interests he still holds in Rhode Island, politics in California, his lawyer Annis Merrill, the south seceding from the Union, the Fort Sumter situation, and Simmons' speech to Congress regarding secession.

    Manuscripts

    Collection consists mainly of correspondence from the period 1910-14, beginning when Oddie initiated his campaign for governor and ending when he was about to terminate his administration. The correspondence is arranged in 19 boxes in alphabetical order by author. There are also 6 boxes and 4 rolls of Nevada State papers, almost entirely copies of legislative bills for the year 1873, and a small number of documents from other years. Subjects include: mining, politics, and government in Nevada (including divorce laws), women's rights, the financial panic of 1907, the Progressive party, and the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915.

    Malcolm King letters to Arthur Lee Kellogg

    Manuscripts

    In these two letters to his nephew, dated February 21 aand October 21, and addressed "Dear Artie," Malcolm King writes of local details. In HM 4281, he draws small pictures as substitutes for words, such as an eye for "I" and an ant for "aunt." He writes "when the Pacific Rail Road is done you can come to California." HM 4282 includes an envelope, and King writes he has sent a letter by personal telegraph, but that "our telegraph line is Love, and it reaches from our hearts to yours."

    Letter from Isaac Sparks to Abel Stearns in which Sparks asks Stearns to pay Maria S. Navaro $12-15 per month until he hears from Sparks again. He also writes that he has settled an account with A.B. Thompson.
