Journal of a trip to California

The journal chronicles a couple's six-month trip from Waukegan, Illinois through Colorado, Utah, and Mexico, to California, August 1920 to February 1921. The entries discuss: train travel, automobile travel, the couple's activities between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Los Angeles, California, visits to Tijuana and Mexicali, Mexico, San Diego, Long Beach, Venice, Hollywood, and Pasadena, California (with a visit to Busch Gardens). The journal contains 40 gelatin silver photographs taken during the trip. Following the trip narrative, the journal includes a listing of houses they bought from 1921 to 1926.

H. T. Scott journal

This journal is H.T. Scott's account of his overland journey to California. Most of the daily entries document he and his party distance traveled that day, and where they camped. Upon arriving at Sonora in the final entry, Scott writes, "We can get plenty here to eat we was very glad when we could see the town sum." Dated 1852, April 13 through August 23. Also included is a photocopied facsimile of the diary.

Peramus Green Ames diary of an overland journey

This is the manuscript journal of Peramus Green Ames, kept during his travels from the Missouri River to California. He reaches California in August 1850, and soon begins mining for gold. He departs for home by ship on October 1, 1853. Includes several pages of financial figures and notes. Journal is dated May 6, 1850 through November 1, 1853.

Partial autograph draft (HM 10850) of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Life of Franklin Pierce (1852) including a two-page preface and pages numbered 24-39, 53-77, and 84-88 (49 pages); also present is a handwritten copy of an article about Pierce by the Chief Justice of New Hampshire, which is not in Hawthorne's hand and is inserted following page numbered 37 (9 pages). Date on preface is 1852 August 27, with location Concord, Massachusetts. Draft pages correspond to text on pages 36-65, 84-122, and 132-140 of the 1852 published edition. Also present in volume are six autograph letters signed from Nathaniel Hawthorne to publisher William D. Ticknor, 1852 August-September (HM 10851, HM 10853, HM 10856, HM 10857, HM 10858, HM 10860) and six autograph letters signed from Franklin Pierce to William D. Ticknor or to Ticknor & Co., 1852 August-September (HM 10852, HM 10854, HM 10855, HM 10859, HM 10861, HM 10862); letters primarily discuss editorial work on the draft and publication of the book. All items are inlaid in leather binding, presumably by collector William K. Bixby, with binding title: Original Manuscripts and Letters by Nathaniel Hawthorne / Life of Pierce. Volume includes Bixby's bookplate.
