Alpheus B. Thompson letters to Timothy Wolcott

These three letters were written by Alpheus Thompson to Timothy Wolcott during 1856 and 1857. In HM 18997, written 1856, September 6, from Santa Barbara, Thompson thanks Wolcott for looking after his son, Francis. In HM 18998 (dated 1857, June 2), Thompson writes of the advantageous opportunities in San Francisco in the real estate market, and asks Wolcott to look after Francis "for a few months longer." He also includes business details regarding property and other assets. The final letter in this series was written in San José, California, on June 17, 1857 (HM 18999), and Thompson asks if Wolcott would take Francis under his charge, and to "provide him with suitable Clothing and Board."

Francis Thompson letters to Timothy Wolcott

In the first of these two letters, Thompson informs Wolcott that he has arrived in Maine. The second is concerned with business and financial affairs, and Thompson writes "I think that my troubles are about over. And I doubt not but what you are as glad as my self." HM 19000 is dated 1857 (signed "Frank Thompson), July 18, and HM 19001 was written 1858, December 16.

Sir Edward Sabine letter to John Wilson Croker

In this letter, written from London, Sabine talks about his voyage in 1821 and his measurements of the Earth (he seems to be sending Croker a copy of a paper on the subject). He mentions the island Spitsbergen (where he took measurements), Earth's meridian, equator, and the "figure of the Earth."

Francis Clark letter to Abigail Wells

In this letter to his aunt, Abigail Wells, Francis Clark is about to embark on a ship as part of a group bound from Boston to San Francisco, in hopes of finding gold in California. He plans to be gone three years. Of his motivations, he writes, "I am in the prime of life, have no family, & here is a chance for enterprise and it seems to me right to embrace it." He apologizes at leaving at such short notice, to leave his parents and friends "to go so far & at some hazard too."

Materials on quartz and gold mining operations mainly in Tuolumne County and Placer County, California. Items include an 1884 letter to Henry G. Wetmore from Charles L. Lang of the Rising Sun Mine in Placer County in which he writes of "the idiotic manner in which my partner Comstock is running the mine;" an 1876 letter from C.J. Moore asking Wetmore to invest in the harness leather trade; an 1877 letter from C.J. Pilsbury to Wetmore with mining engineering instructions; an 1888 letter from E.A. Roberts to Wetmore about selling a mine in Sonora; an 1877 letter to Wetmore from Sam Rudolph at the Bower Cave Mine in Colorado regarding quartz testing; an 1880 description of the Well Rough Mine and statements regarding the collapse of the Soulsbyville Mill; an indenture between the Duchow brothers and Wetmore for the Lony Mine; and a printed pamphlet on the Mazeppa Gold Mining Company in Tuolumne County, California.
