Paradise Lost

Two bound volumes containing a manuscript copy of Paradise Lost in the handwriting of Sarah Siddons. Volume 1 is prefaced by a handwritten 22-line eulogistic poem beginning, "Penned by a hand of Elegance and grace ..." by her son Henry Siddons. Volume 1 (199 pages) contains book 1 through book 5, line 720, and volume 2 (242 pages) continues to the end of book 12. The last page of volume 2 contains the note "Many of the learned [?] similes & parts meerly [sic] descriptive and narrative are omitted in this copy, in order to facilitate the reading of the poem aloud."

The eight manuscript volumes, partly in pencil, include parts of early versions, with some torn pages; the volumes contain substantial corrections and deletions. The work is a memoir of simple living in natural surroundings that includes spiritual discovery, social experiment, and satire; it was written over the course of two years, two months, and two days but Thoreau compressed the time into a single calendar year.

Handwritten copy of a revision of Joanna Baillie's play "De Montfort," by Thomas Campbell, with extensive annotations of notes and corrections in the hand of Sarah Siddons. Laid in the front is a proof portrait of Siddons by S. Arlent Edwards, signed by the artist in pencil.

Life of Gouverneur Morris :

Draft of Roosevelt's publication Life of Gouverneur Morris (1888) with autograph edits. Incomplete; draft begins in Chapter VI: The Formation of the National Constitution and continues to the end of the manuscript. Pages have been inserted into paper mounts and bound into three volumes. Each volume has a portrait of Roosevelt; the photograph of him wearing a military uniform in volume one is signed.
