Adams writes from Philadelphia, "I believe no assembly ever had more extensive and complicated objects before them than our Congress. We shall be united." He discusses the two bearers of the letter, Aquilla Hall and Josias Carvill Hall of Maryland, "two young military adventurers" (probably Aquila Hall, Jr. and Josias Carvil Hall, two signers of the 1775 Bush Declaration of support for Boston and freedom).

George A. Smith journal

Typescript of George A. Smith's journal, kept during his travels from Great Salt Lake City to Iron County from 1850-1851. Includes a description of Smith's travels, including references to camping at Dry Creek, Utah, with John Doyle Lee; a stop at Fort Provo with a full report of provisions; the exchange of a dead ox for an Indian boy; and Captain Jefferson Hunt's joining the party on his return trip from California. Smith also reports on the camp at Parowan, including the building of Parowan Hall, a mill, and various cabins. Smith writes of a letter he wrote to President Millard Fillmore requesting a military post on the Muddy River and notes that "we are a military people and must be...we want a military organization for Iron County." References are made in the journal to Amasa Lyman, Anson Call, Henry Lunt, Brother Shirts, Simon Baker, and Hew Whitney ("the first native white citizen in Iron County").

Palomita letters to "Dear Mom" and "Deer Grandmudder"

HM 83620 (a): Letter written from Palomita to "Dearest Mom" from Santa Monica, California. In this letter, Palomita writes about situation where she may move back to Pomona, California, "if things get bad." She writes, "We were ready to evacuate San Pedro once & now Bob has the trailer ready to pile things into - It may all be silly but still one can't be too careful at a time like this." She also questions "suppose they will close the border like in the last war?" She finishes the letter in Spanish.

Simpson writes to the Kern brothers regarding a ring worn by the late Richard H. Kern which was turned over to Brigham Young. Simpson gives several recommendations for tracking down the ring.

H. T. Scott journal
Manuscripts
This journal is H.T. Scott's account of his overland journey to California. Most of the daily entries document he and his party distance traveled that day, and where they camped. Upon arriving at Sonora in the final entry, Scott writes, "We can get plenty here to eat we was very glad when we could see the town sum." Dated 1852, April 13 through August 23. Also included is a photocopied facsimile of the diary.
