HM 16556 is dated 1795, December 31 and addressed to José Joaquín de Arrillaga, and concerns an expedition to Monterey. HM 16557, dated 1804, December 28, and addressed to Felipe Antonio de Goycoechea, concerns explorations plans of the Americans, and the possible ramifications thereof. HM 16558, also addressed to de Goycoechea and dated 1814, August 5, informs him of the death of de Arrillaga and the subsequent taking over of his duties until further orders are received. These three letters, written by Ortega to fellow soliders Morales (HM 16588) and Arrillaga (HM 16589-16590), contain particulars about the exploration of California.
