Letter written by Reverdy Johnson to General James W. Denver and sent from San Francisco. Johnson writes that he will not be able to attend a meeting for the "friends of Judge Douglas" due to previous engagements. He mentions that he recently gave a speech supporting Douglas in Boston and had distributed related pamphlets. He also notes that he was having the speech copied in several California newspapers. The papers include a diary kept by Parish B. Johnson when he was a captain in the U.S. Army during a trip from Drum Barracks, Wilmington, California to Tucson, Arizona, in 1864. There are also 38 pieces of correspondence primarily written within the Johnson family. The authors include Johnson himself, his wife Libbie, their son Smith S. Johnson, Parish's brother Grove L. Johnson, Grove's daughter Josephine and his son Albert M. Johnson as well as Libbie Johnson's aunt and uncle, Mary and Park Waterbury. The subjects covered are limited to family concerns and the newspaper business in Northern California and Washington Territory. The ephemera consists of four items.

Charles A. Leake wrote this letter to James W. Denver from "Sacramento City" and the letter is devoted almost entirely to California state politics. He writes at length upon the recently-concluded Democratic state party convention, the maneuverings therein of various factions, and the circumstances of leading California political figures such as former governor John Bigler and current U.S. senator David Broderick, as well as the influence of events in California upon national political events.
