Poetical manuscript commonplace book

A verse miscellany, entitled "Poetical Manuscript Commonplace book" on the spine and "English Verses, Time of James and Charles the First" within the volume; it is written in a single neat italic hand, probably written in Oxford, England, approximately 1635, and associated with Christ Church College, Oxford University. The volume contains 108 poems, almost all of which are presented anonymously; there are mentions of race and skin color and more than 60 of the poems concern women, love, or marriage. Some of the poems are attributed to, among others, Thomas Carew, Richard Corbet, Robert Herrick, Ben Jonson, Henry King, Thomas Randolph, and William Strode. The volume has 19th-century foliation and a list of contents in the front. The volume is bound in contemporary calf, sewn on four alum-tawed slips, covers with a single gilt rule border, head of spine has some damage, and the end leaves were replaced in approximately 1830; also, with a catalogue cutting pasted inside front cover and a morocco-backed slipcase.

This small group consists mainly of materials dealing with the production of Denny's two plays. There are multiple copies of each of these plays, but each has slight variations. "Black Bart, The Lone Robber of Calaveras," was performed at California's First Theatre by the Troupers of the Gold Coast in 1946 and 1952, then at the Balboa Park Puppet Theatre in San Diego by the Junior Theatre Summer Work Shop in 1950, and finally in 1961 by the Triangle Club at the three-day Apple Festival in Julian, California. Included are scripts of her play and an essay written by Denny about Black Bart (b. 1829). Her other play, "Lola Montez, The Spider Dancer," was performed at California's First Theatre in 1948 and 1949 by the Troupers of the Gold Coast; and included are scripts of the play, an incomplete short story about Lola Montez (1818-1861), song lyrics, and the music written by Edward C. Hopkins.

This collection primarily contains autograph letters from prominent architects, artists, authors, engravers, playwrights, and sculptors from the 19th century in England. These autograph letters appear to have been collected by Anna C. Stryke. Another portion of the correspondence contains letters from Richard Hancock, an English naturalist written to Stryke from 1924 through 1926. Items of interest include travel diaries to Hawaii, written by Stryke and her sister, Mary C. Stryke in 1935. There are also a number of drawings, sketches, and watercolors found in ephemera.

Letters, diaries, essays, and other papers of Samuel Frank Dexter. The large portion of the collection consists of the letters that Dexter wrote to his children during the 1901 trip to California. The almost daily letters describe in minute detail their experiences and observations of various parts of California such as Alameda County, Bakersfield, Kern County, La Jolla, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Mount Lowe, Pasadena, Redlands, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Gabriel, San Pedro, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz County, and Santa Monica. The letters also contain descriptions of the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, the California coast, and North Mexico. He also wrote frequently along their railroad trip to California, describing such places as Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, and Iowa.
