Manuscripts

Regimental orders, muster rolls, pay abstracts, weekly returns, communications, memorials, etc. of Nathaniel Goodwin's command. Also, some copies of communications from Gerrish's headquarters, including the "Orders issued at Winter Hill, Nov. 8, 1778," "Copy of Orders to That Captain Commanding Each Division of German Troops, Cambridge, Nov. 8, 1778," signed by Nathaniel Goodwin, a copy of the letter from William Heath to Jacob Gerrish (Boston, Nov. 1, 1778), "Rout of the German Troops from Cambridge to Enfield drawing 4 days provisions on Marching," signed by James Richardson," "Rout of the British Troops from Rutland to Enfield drawing 4 days provisions on March," miscellaneous diary entries, and Goodwin's letters to Nathaniel Heath, Benjamin Beals, Abram Washburn, and other officers in his detachment, chiefly regarding settling the companies' accounts. (1779-1780). Item contains 61 leaves in bound volume.

Theodore Barrell commonplace book

Manuscripts

Commonplace book that Theodore Barrell put together between 1804 and 1846. The bulk of the manuscript is written in the same hand, most likely Theodore Barrell. Included are copies of letters (1775-1778) addressed to Colburn Barrell; devotional prose and poetry (1780-1781) including those by Dr. George Newbern Barrell; miscellaneous writings of Robert Sandeman; a plan of the Paul Alley Sandemanian church in the Barbican in London; and copies of letters (1780-1783) by Walter Newbern Barrell. The poetry and prose provide an insight into the devotional culture of the Sandemanian churches in New England and in Britain, especially in London and Perthshire, Scotland. The letters cover the events in Boston and Halifax during the American Revolution from a loyalist perspective. Walter Newbern Barrell's correspondence relates news from London, including those of the Gordon riots and their immediate aftermath.

The collection primarily contains letters and documents relating to Hugh Campbell, 3rd Earl of Loudoun; his son, John Campbell, 4th Earl of Loudoun; other Campbell family members; and various political and military associates. John Campbells military activities during the 1745 to 1746 Jacobite uprising in Scotland and the Seven Years War in North America in 1756 and 1757 are especially documented. Materials in the collection include correspondence, memorials, and petitions; muster rolls, returns, orders, and other military records; appointments; estate records including accounts, bills, receipts, and inventories; and land and government documents.
