The John Genest scrapbooks consist of two folio volumes, which are extra-illustrated supplements to Genest's multi-volume publication on the history of the English stage. The scrapbooks contain approximately 300 items including portrait and view prints, playbills, autographs, and 70 letters of theatrical persons; many of the later letters are addressed to Edward Smyth Pigott who was the Examiner of Plays from 1875 to 1895.

Manuscripts

This collection is what is known as an autograph collection and Kane spent years, not only collecting autographs of famous people on his own, but also acquiring the collections of other autograph seekers. This material spans multiple centuries and formats: from a 15th century manuscript on vellum to a 1951 typewritten letter. The collection includes accounts, letters, photographs, poems, government papers and royal proclamations, signed by, among others, actors and actresses, authors, explorers, kngs, magicians, queens, politicians, scientists, singers, and soldiers. Many of the famous people in this collection are also to be found in other manuscript collections in the Huntington Library.

John Burroughs wrote this letter from West Park, New York. It reads: "Yours of the 20th was duly read. I am writing very little these days, and am cautious about binding myself by promises. But if I should chance to have anything that would be suitable for your columns I will let you have it. Very sincerely John Burroughs."
